Summer update for incoming 5th grade
I hope your summer is off to a great start! There are currently over 160 soon-to-be 5th graders that are signed up for band next year!! It's not too late to join band, if your child did not return their orange sheet before the end of the year - click HERE to sign-up!
Click HERE and watch a short video (5 min.) message for parents & students!
Special information for french horn, euphonium, tuba and percussion was also emailed - if you did not get this, please contact Mrs. Menke!
**CLICK for the band checklist and recommended instrument/book/supplies information
** We want to inform you that students participating in 5th Grade Band next year will be missing Social Studies class twice a week due to scheduling constraints. After careful consideration and discussions with school administration, this arrangement was determined to be the best fit for next year’s schedule. We believe that band provides students with valuable opportunities for personal growth, creativity, and collaboration, and we are committed to ensuring they stay current with all course content.
For families who prefer that their child not miss Social Studies, we are offering an alternative before-school band option. This group will meet two days a week from 7:30 to 7:50 AM and will have the same instruction as the in-school band time.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Driftmier or Mrs. Menke.
** If you are planning on renting an instrument - you can wait until later in the summer! Rieman Music will be available at Open House before school begins. Here are all 3 local music companies (click name for more information): Rieman Music, Sleister Music, Uptempo Music
CAUTION: Online shopping can be convenient and cost-saving for many items, but I strongly recommend you consider the following when finding an instrument at a significantly lower cost (or possibly in a fun color). Some of these instruments may be a great deal now but may be difficult to play, have a poor sound, may not be as durable and local music stores will not repair. Please use the attached information with my recommended brands as a guide.
If you have a used instrument, please be sure it is in good playing condition. Now is a great time to take it to a local music store to have it checked over and get your book and supplies!
Students will need their own instrument / supplies / book for their first lesson after Labor Day.
Enjoy some live music this summer!
Come check out the Music Under the Stars concerts - I will be playing clarinet with the Des Moines Metro Concert Band on June 15 & 29! This FREE concert is outside of Hoyt Sherman Place at 7:00 PM - bring a blanket or chair - (flyer attached)! There will also be a special performance at the Des Moines Water Works Park on July 6!
Noce (downtown Des Moines) - jazz music, students can attend until 9:00 PM

First Big Band practices
I am excited to share that we are starting our large group band practices (called Big Band)! Due to the huge group of 5th graders, I had to divide everyone into 4 groups to safely fit in the band room :)
** Big Band is at the end of the day (2:40-3:05) during their FIT time
** Wednesday band lessons - check carefully which group you are in (band lessons stay on Wednesday)
** the official list is attached (band lessons will be on one day and their Big Band day is the other day)
other day)
** we will combine both smaller bands for our concerts
Victory Band - upstairs homerooms
** students bring instruments & music on Mondays AND Thursdays
Integrity Band - downstairs homerooms
** students bring instruments & music on Tuesdays AND Fridays
Lakewood Music Shirt Order
** families can purchase a Lakewood Music Shirt ($6.00) that will be worn at two of our family performances
** this is OPTIONAL - students are also able to wear the Warrior Dash shirt
** students in Lakewood Singers will also be using the same shirt (Ms. Cook is sharing information about Singers soon!)
** we will keep this same design for several more years - family members are welcome to purchase a shirt too!
** form is attached - orders and money due Oct. 14
Practice Challenge
** regular home practice is important to develop muscle memory, music reading skills and confidence playing an instrument - is your child practicing at least 3 days a week?
** they have 3-5 songs circled in their band book to practice at home before their next lesson
** Practice Chart - Olympic Challenge - you may have seen a bright orange paper stuck to their band book - their goal is to complete the 5 goals in each ring!
** for the "PLAY" goals, they should practice these songs several times at home and be ready to play them for me at their next lesson
** each ring may take 2-3 weeks to complete
WOW - I can't believe we are finishing up 4 weeks of band lessons already! I love these students' positive attitudes and can't wait to hear what they sound like as a large group!
Thanks for encouraging your young musician!
First band lessons - NEXT WEEK!
Let the fun begin! Next week we start band lessons - your child will need to bring their instrument their assigned day (see graphic below). This schedule will only be for 2 weeks before I create the regular lesson schedule. Parents - please check your email for an attached document that lists all student names and dates if you are unsure.
** if your child is sick, forgets their instrument or misses their first lesson, I will meet with them on Monday, Sept. 12!
This weekend would be a great time to chat about your family schedule and which days are best for them to practice and where in your home is a good place to practice! A great goal of 3 - 4 days of practicing for 10-15 minutes each time. Let's get off to a great start with practicing at home!
If you are still needing a band book or supplies - please let me know because I have many items at school that you can purchase.
There are 190 excited 5th graders ready to get started and I can't wait to see them all! If your child is anxious at all, please assure them I don't expect them to know anything or to be able to play their instrument yet - we will start at the very beginning!
Have a great weekend and let me know if I can help in any way!
WELCOME BACK! It was great seeing so many families at Open House, but I know there was a long line at times so I'm sorry if I missed talking with you! Below is the Open House handout with all the must-know info for the beginning of school. Also checkout the Beginning Band Info tab up above for more information!
Students will need their instrument, book and supplies for their first band lesson after Labor Day.

6:30 PM HS Auditorium
ONE concert - Gold and Purple Band combined!!
Band Madness Bracket ~ Practice Challenge
We have jumped on the NCAA bracket craziness and have started a friendly competition in band! For each round, students have 3 ways to "score" points and the student that has more points wins and moves on (practicing their Big Band music). There is also a "comeback" group for students that were beat. I am working on gathering donations so that at the end all students will be able to pick a prize for all their hard work! Check out the brackets to the left!!
Big Band UPDATE - February
We are just 2 weeks away from our concert and students have been working hard in Big Band - hopefully you are hearing some practicing at home :)
I apologize for any confusion on the concert times - when I was planning with Ms. Cook our plan was for students to be scheduled at opposite time slots for the Feb. 8th band concert and the Feb. 15 music concert. I made the mistake of organizing by their afternoon teacher and not their morning (homeroom) teacher. We hope all of our musicians are able to perform, if your child has a conflict - please let me know that they will be gone, thank you!
Also 2 reminders about taking care of their instruments:
1. please keep instruments out of extreme cold - this can cause damage
2. check that your child has enough supplies for their instrument (extra reeds, oil, etc.)
Thanks and see you in 2 weeks, please let me know if you have any questions!
Big Band UPDATE - Dec. 3
I am excited to share that I have been given approval by Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Neifert (nurse) to increase the number of students in the band room and start having Big Band twice a week!
** Monday and Thursday bands will combine as the GOLD Big Band (11:55 - 12:20)
** Tuesday and Friday bands will combine as the PURPLE Big Band (12:20 - 12:45)
Here are the important details for your child:
1. bring instrument and music twice a week (percussion, euphonium and tuba will still have lessons on Wednesday)
2. their band lesson is still only once a week (no change)
I realize this is a big change to bring their instrument twice a week (I recommend keeping their band folder/book in their backpack), but I know the extra time to practice will greatly benefit their music reading, endurance and confidence in playing their instrument and preparing for our future performances!
We are getting ready to perform for the students and staff at the Dec. 21 school assembly in the morning. Due to limited space, family and friends will be able to watch the band and Lakewood Singers on the live-stream (search: Norwalk Warrior Productions on YouTube)
Our next family performance will be the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 8 at the Performing Arts Center - High School Auditorium. More information will be sent in the beginning of January!
Thank you for supporting your young musician!!
YouTube Livestream - Norwalk Warrior Productions - click HERE!
Thursday, October 28, Lakewood Gym
6:00 PM = Tuesday and Friday band lessons
6:45 PM = Thursday band lessons
7:30 PM = Monday band lessons
** Wednesday band lessons will be divided up differently - please click HERE for their concert groups
** there are 3 separate concerts to reduce the size of the groups and audience
** concert will last approximately 20 minutes to share with you what we have learned so far
** concert will be livestreamed using the Norwalk Warrior Productions YouTube site.
** students can wear either Lakewood Music shirt OR their Warrior Dash shirt
We meet in groups of approximately 40-50 in the band room with spacing that meets the social distancing protocols. Pictures attached below to show you what the band room looks like with chairs 3 ft by 5 ft apart.
Big Band practices are during the school day. We will meet for 25 minutes to practice playing songs from our band book together and eventually preparing for concerts.
Your child's Big Band practice is on the SAME DAY as their band lesson - click HERE for the schedule.
The first week of Big Band has been fun hearing the students play together with a mix of instruments! Hopefully you are linked to SeeSaw and have seen their video, if not, please ask your child to join the Band SeeSaw group with the link I sent to their email.
I'm excited for band lessons to get started soon!
Your child will have band lessons on one day a week during the school day (schedule below)
First lesson - students need their instrument, supplies and band book (folding music stands can stay at home)
If you need any help with getting these, please let me know. Click HERE for instrument, music store and supply information - all 3 stores will deliver instruments and supplies to Lakewood for free if you order online!
When students arrive at school with their band instrument, they should drop it off in the band room. Every student has a cubby in the band storage room to keep their instrument during the school day.
Home practicing is important - students that make a plan to practice 4 days a week for 15-20 minutes will be off to a great start! I will be giving students a practice chart to record the minutes they practice at home as part of our Olympic Quest challenge!
Summer Band Update #2
REMINDER: although I know your child may be VERY excited, please don't let them play their instrument yet (I recommend hiding it if needed!) First lessons will start after Labor Day and it will be fun for them to start learning together with their classmates. Also, this reduces the chance for any instrument damage to happen.
Helpful forms - Checklist Recommended Instrument Brands/Supply List
OPEN HOUSE - Aug. 19, 4:00-6:00 PM: Please stop by the band room - NO appointment needed. I can't wait to see everyone! Rieman Music will also be available at Open House. For the quickest process - use their online rental form (click HERE) and pick up everything at Open House! You can also stop in to rent and ask questions to the Rieman Music representatives.
LOCAL MUSIC STORES:
** all offer rental programs, and rent reputable/durable brands
COVID safety - I plan on starting the school year similar to last year with many of the same safety protocols as COVID still lingers. Please click HERE for the band safety video that I made for last school year. For the first 6 weeks we will not be meeting in large groups, this is mainly to allow students to become more comfortable assembling and playing their instrument.
Looking forward to getting this year's 5th graders started on their band adventure and see you at Open House!! Please also let me know if you would like added to my email list!
Now would also be a good time to talk with your child about some of the Leader in Me 7 Habits to help them have a super band experience:
It's summer and live music is coming back!
Come check out the Music Under the Stars concerts - I will be playing bass clarinet with the Des Moines Metro Concert Band for the next 3 Sundays! These FREE concerts at the state capital at 7:00 PM - bring a blanket or chair - Inside Scoop ice cream truck will also be there (more info below)!
Click HERE for more outdoor live music!
Beginning Band Information:
**The band checklist and recommended instrument/book/supplies information can be found on the "Beginning Band Info" drop down tab above.
Mark you calendars: Performance/Concert dates for next year have been updated on the band website - click "Concert Dates" tab up above.
If you are planning on renting an instrument - you can wait until later in the summer! Rieman Music will be available at Open House before school begins (click HERE for their prices). Here are all 3 local music companies (click name for more information): Rieman Music, Sleister Music, Uptempo Music
CAUTION: Online shopping can be convenient and cost-saving for many items, but I strongly recommend you consider the following when finding an instrument at a significantly lower cost or possibly in a fun color. Some of these instruments may be a great deal now but may be difficult to play or have a poor sound quality, they also may not be as durable and break down often. Local music stores may not service many of these instruments as well. Please use the attached information with my recommended brands as a guide.
If you have a used instrument, please be sure it is in good playing condition. Now is a great time to take it to a local music store to have it checked over and get your book and supplies!
Students will need instrument / supplies / book for their first lesson after Labor Day.
Please do not hesitate to email me over the summer with any questions about band or finding an instrument for your child! It's not too late to join band for next year, please encourage any other 5th grade families to contact me if they are interested!
If your family was a "maybe" please let me know if you need any help. If your family chose the "drive-through instrument fitting" I will be scheduling it later in July and will contact you.
Mrs. Elaine Menke "emenke@norwalk.k12.ia.us"
Congratulations to all the students that performed at Solo Festival or recorded their solos to share with their family!
COMBINED CLASS BAND PRACTICES
To help us get ready for our spring concert - we will have combined class band practices in the gym for the next 2 weeks (during the school day)! Thank you for helping remind your child to bring their instrument on the extra day!
Tuesday, Apr. 27 & May 4 = Bohlender, Rench, Clouse/Sullivan
Thursday, Apr. 29 & May 6 = Hollingsworth, Kramer, Krichau
Friday, Apr. 30 & May 7 = Anderson, Pelzer, Ramthun
MAY 10 CONCERT
Our spring concert is coming up soon - May 10 at the High School Auditorium. We will still have 3 smaller concerts - teachers and concert times listed below. I am hoping to have an update soon for audience capacity - masks and social distancing are still required.
6:00 Anderson, Pelzer, Ramthun
6:45 Hollingsworth, Kramer, Krichau
7:30 Bohlender, Clouse/Sullivan, Rench
I know this is a busy time with spring sports and activities but I hope as many of our musicians will be able to perform for our final concert for families, they have worked so hard all year! Please let me know if your child is unable to attend.
MISSING TRUMPET BELL COVERS
If your child plays trumpet - could you check around home if any bell covers have been taken home? I am missing many bell covers and will need all I can find for our spring concert! Thanks for looking!
SOLO FESTIVAL
Students that performed at Solo Festival will be getting their rubric sheet at their next band lesson, along with a certificate and ribbon (due to the large number of students that participated, I ran out of ribbons - more are coming!)
Special congratulations to the students selected as Outstanding Performers:
