How Segregation Was Invented

After our conversation about housing and school segregation in class, I thought you might be interested in this Atlantic article "Segregation had to be invented", by Alana Semuels. It talks about how segregation first developed in the late 1800s/early 1900s. As we've discussed, racial hierarchies tend to be more about power than physical differences between people. That was part of the development of segregation, too, which was a response by the powerful interests in society to poor white and black workers banding together to try and improve conditions for all working-class people.
