Abilities, Disabilities, and Human Diversity

One aspect of human diversity we have not discussed in this class is the continuum of abilities and disabilities found within our species. Humans come in a whole variety of shapes and sizes, and with a large number of variations around our common physical themes. I recently read this article, Unspeakable Conversations by Harriet McBryde Johnson. The article is from 2003, but Ms. Johnson, who is, among other things, an advocate for people with disabilities, writes very eloquently about what it means to be accepted as a full-fledged human being when one has disabilities. I highly recommend the article.
