Success in Math, ESL, and English (SMEE)

Co-Chairs: Karen Cox and Katia Fuchs

Meeting Day and Time: 4th Mondays 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.

Meeting Frequency: once a month, and as needed

Committee Type: Advisory

Committee Description: The Success in Math, ESL and English Committee provides a forum for analyzing and discussing research and best practices focused on student skills necessary to succeed in college, and makes funding recommendations based on that analysis when monies are available. The committee examines pedagogy in Math, ESL, and English courses; tracks the impact of AB 705 implementation on student success in Math, ESL, English and other departments impacted by AB 705; and collaborates with other Academic Senate committees with shared interests, such as the Student Equity Strategies and Matriculation Advisory committees. The committee provides recommendations for AB 705-related projects supported by categorical funds, per the CCSF Roles, Responsibilities and Processes (RRP) Handbook, as well as recommendations to other participatory governance bodies as appropriate on matters related to AB 705 implementation and student success in Math, ESL and English.

The SMEE committee acknowledges that we live in a society built on institutionalized racism that includes systems of higher education. In the committee’s work to implement AB 705 and bolster student success in Math, ESL and English, SMEE commits to actively inquire about and dismantle structures that perpetuate racist attitudes and biases, and more insidiously, processes and procedures related to student success and AB 705 implementation that silently minoritize, marginalize and perpetuate systemic barriers for students and employees of color.

The SMEE committee focuses on data-driven recommendations and practices to:

  • identify and remove systemic barriers through consideration of Math, ESL and English placement practices, promising equity-driven classroom practices, and other areas that inform curriculum, methodology, classroom culture, integration of tutors, librarians, and other support resources;

  • identify and address the success of CCSF student equity populations in Math, ESL and English;

  • promote innovative practices (i.e. embedded tutoring, embedded librarians, ESL partnerships, and a variety of collaborative efforts with student services) to maintain rigor while eliminating opportunity gaps;

  • focus on and influence equitable outcomes for students and employees;

  • review, discuss, interpret and disseminate information about AB705, AB1705 and any other subsequent legislation impacting Math, ESL and English department and implementation; and

  • hold diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as a core committee value through its policies, practices, goals and recommendations.
