Informed Consent to Participate in a Research Study

Study Title: Philosophy of Living Project

Principal Investigator: Jeffrey Wattles

You are being invited to participate in a research study. This consent form will provide you with information on the research project, what you will need to do, and the associated risks and benefits of the research. Your participation is voluntary. Please read this form carefully. It is important that you ask questions and fully understand the research in order to make an informed decision. You will receive a copy of this document to take with you.

Purpose

I am engaged in a study of experiential learning. I began to do this because some students have been getting results worth sharing from the experiential projects I assign in some of my classes. In these projects students apply in their lives concepts from class—or variations on these concepts as they are modified by the student. The resulting papers that reflect on student experiences in the light of classroom study often express concepts beautifully and tell educational and uplifting stories.

Procedures

The project experience and the handing in of a paper describing that experience and commenting on it from the perspective of the philosopher or religious tradition being studied are both normal parts of the class.

If I find a paper with an insight or story that I believe to be of significant educational value, I may ask for permission to share it. Selections from student papers may become part of my course website. In addition, in my speaking and writing, it is sometimes valuable to have permission to share quotations from student writing and to retell inspiring stories. These quotations or stories could be used in educational programs or in presentations at professional meetings.

You are being asked for permission so that I can make further use of your paper, either in print, in speeches, or in electronic media such as a website.

There is no consequence for your grade, one way or the other, if you participate or decline to participate.

If you decline to give permission, I will abide by that decision.

If you give me permission to make further use of the paper, then if you direct me to give you credit by citing your name in connection with any writing of yours that I use or any story of yours that I publish, I will do as directed, respecting scholarly standards regarding plagiarism in my use of your writing.

If you give me permission, but direct me to preserve your privacy by not using your name in connection with any writing of yours that I use or any story of yours that I may publish, I will respect your privacy in that way.

Benefits

The potential benefits of the Philosophy of Living Project, if published, may include helping to pioneer a new approach to philosophical education, which may possibly yield discoveries that could contribute to philosophical understanding. No direct personal benefit to the student is expected.

Risks and Discomforts

If you have written a useful paper which includes sensitive personal information, give permission for further use, and require me to give credit by mentioning your name, there is a possibility that you might be embarrassed to see that story with your name in print. You should realize that there is the possibility that if your name is connected with a story that I publish, publicity may accrue to you, with some possibly unwelcome consequences. No compensation for unwelcome consequences from participating in this experiment is available.

Conflict of Interest

Any book I publish may be expected to yield royalties, so to quote from your writing in a book could help me earn some money.

Privacy and Confidentiality

The permission forms are kept in a file cabinet in my office and are not stored with the hard copies.

If you grant permission, your paper will be assigned an identifier symbol (e.g., Eth Spr 11, spontan 4) which preserves confidentiality if you request confidentiality. In addition, any confidential hard copy will have the name removed (including in headers and footers), and the symbol alone will be used to connect it with the permission form.

If I keep a hard copy of your paper, that, too, will be stored in a file cabinet in my office. Any electronic copies are stored in a folder on a drive maintained by Kent State University: U:\docs\Student Papers.

When the publication(s) based on the study have appeared in print, these files will be deleted, and all permission forms and papers will be shredded. If that takes place at Kent State, then the materials will be disposed of in the high security recycling bin maintained in the Kent State University Department of Philosophy mail room.

Voluntary Participation

Taking part in this study is entirely up to you, and no one will hold it against you if you decide not to do it. In particular, there are no consequences for your grade whether you participate or not. If you do take part, you may stop at any time, by informing me that I am to make no further use of your writing.
