Getting to Know the Author:
Knowing background information about an author can often times help us understand the story better because author’s often times, “write what they know.” Read the biography about the author and then do the small assignment below.

Vocabulary:
Being familiar with the vocabulary in a story in important because if you don’t understand the words in the story then you won’t understand the story itself. Complete the vocabulary assignment below so that you are familiar with the words that will appear in the story.
Directions: Read through ALL the vocab words below so that you are familiar with these words and their definitions. Then pick 10 of the ones that you find the most interesting and write them in a sentence. The sentence must include context clues to what the word means.
Example: The loquacious boy ran down the hall making tons of noise.
1. bedazzle -to cause someone to lose clear vision, especially from intense light
2. powwow -a council of or with Native Americans
3. goody -something considered choice to eat
4. besprinkle -scatter with liquid; wet lightly
5. cinquefoil -any of a numerous plants grown for their five-petaled flowers; abundant in temperate regions; alleged to have medicinal properties

21. ordination -the act of ordaining; the act of conferring (or receiving) holy orders
22. mingle -to bring or combine together or with something else
23. eventide -the latter part of the day (the period of decreasing daylight from late afternoon until nightfall)
24. Sabbath -a day of rest and worship: Sunday for most Christians; Saturday for the Jews and a few Christians; Friday for Muslims
25. blasphemer -a person who speaks disrespectfully of sacred things
26. blaze -a strong flame that burns brightly
27. undeceive -free from deception or illusion
28. ocular -of or relating to or resembling the eye
29. hoary -showing characteristics of age, especially having grey or white hair
30. unhallowed -not hallowed or consecrated
31. abashed -feeling or caused to feel uneasy and self-conscious
32. agone -gone by; or in the past
33. abash -cause to be embarrassed; cause to feel self-conscious
34. pealing -a deep prolonged sound (as of thunder or large bells)
35. cackle -squawk shrilly and loudly, characteristic of hens
36. indistinct -not clearly defined or easy to perceive or understand
37. undeceived -freed of a mistaken or misguided notion
38. overburdened -heavily burdened with work or cares
39. lurid -horrible in fierceness or savagery
40. pendent -an adornment that hangs from a piece of jewelry (necklace or earring)
41. pollute -make impure
42. demoniac -someone who acts as if possessed by a demon
