Getting to Know the Author:
Knowing background information about an author can often times help us understand the story better because author’s often times, “write what they know.” Read the biography about the author and then do the small assignment below.

Vocabulary:
Being familiar with the vocabulary in a story in important because if you don’t understand the words in the story then you won’t understand the story itself. Complete the vocabulary assignment below so that you are familiar with the words that will appear in the story.
Directions: Read through ALL the vocab words below so that you are familiar with these words and their definitions. Then pick 10 of the ones that you find the most interesting and write them in a sentence. The sentence must include context clues to what the word means.
Example: The loquacious boy ran down the hall making tons of noise.
1. Pugulis- (noun) a boxer esp. professional one
2. Obstreperous -(adj) noisy and difficult to control
3. Cadaverous- (adj) resembling a corpse in being very thin, bony and pale
4. Arduous- (adj) involving or requiring strenuous effort; difficult or tiring
5. Avocation- (noun) a hobby or minor occupation
6. Consternation- (noun) feelings of anxiety or dismay
7. Prudence- (noun) acting with or showing care for the thought of the future
8. Sallow- (adj) a persons face or complexion of an unhealthy yellow or pale brown color
9. Countenance- (noun) a persons face or facial expression
10. Choleric- (adj) bad-tempered or irritable
11. Usurp- (verb) take a position of power or importance illegally or by force
12. Paroxysm -(noun) a sudden attack or violent expression of a particular emotion or activity
13. Pallid- (adj) (of a persons face) pale, typically because of poor health
14. Evince- (verb) reveal the presence of a quality or feeling
15. Tacit- (adj) understood or implied without being stated
16. Incubus- (noun) a male demon believed to have intercourse with sleeping women
17. Ignominious- (adj) deserving or causing public disgrace or shame
18. Restive- (adj) unable to keep still or silent and becoming increasingly difficult to control
