Assignment for The Black Cat
Directions: This particular story is teeming with symbolism and themes. Your task is to either focus on the theme of the tale or its symbols. Once you have made your decision, you will either produce an analytical paragraph in which you argue your point.
Remember to PEAL on your paper!
Point- This is where you state your claim about what you believe to be the truth/right answer.
Evidence- This is where you go back to the text and pull direct quotes that support your thinking from the point you made.
Analysis- This is where you explain how the evidence that you found in the text (your direct quote) shows that your point/thinking is correct. You must connect your analysis to your quote and your original point. If you don’t have a good analysis then your evidence and point are irrelevant.
Link- This is where you connect your conclusion back to the point you are trying to make.

Choose one of these symbols and using your critical thinking abilities and analytical skills, determine what the symbol could be representing. The symbol will only represent one thing that will then be carried throughout the entire tale. Your job is to determine what it represents and how that symbol is portrayed throughout the entire story. Then produce an analytical paragraph in which you defend your claim and thinking.
