Assignment for Lower Level Short Story
Directions: You are going to create a story map for the short story. In the story map, you must follow the plot line structure of the tale, include details which describe and analyze characterization, and show the importance of the setting. Follow the directions carefully.
Steps to creating a story map:
1. You will need a stack of note cards.
2. As you read the story, you will create a note card for each event that occurs in the story. These events will follow the plot line structure. You must have the minimum requirements for each section of the plot line listed below for a total of at least 11 note cards. You are always welcome to do more than the minimum.
a. Exposition- 2 note card minimum
b. Rising Action-3 note card minimum
c. Climax- 1 note card minimum
d. Falling Action-3 note card minimum
e. Resolution-2 note card minimum
3. For each note card, draw a picture of the action that occurred in the story that represents the part of the plot line in the story. Color then label the picture so that you know what is going on when you look at it. On the back of the index card, answer the following questions about the event.
1. Which characters were involved in this action and how does it add to the characterization of the story?
2. What happened in this part of the story and how does it portray the part of the plot line that you are examining (the more specific and detailed the better)?
3. Why was this event important to the overall plot of the story?
4. From this event, what possible theme might be forming
4. When you are done, tape these cards together with the picture facing up to form a story map.
