Directions: This particular story has several themes dealing with societal issues. Your task is to determine a theme about society that Chopin is commenting on using this story. Once you have determined a theme, you will produce an analytical paragraph in which you argue your point and support your thinking.

Remember to PEAL on your paper!

Point- This is where you state your claim about what you believe to be the truth/right answer.

Evidence- This is where you go back to the text and pull direct quotes that support your thinking from the point you made.

Analysis- This is where you explain how the evidence that you found in the text (your direct quote) shows that your point/thinking is correct. You must connect your analysis to your quote and your original point. If you don’t have a good analysis then your evidence and point are irrelevant.

Link- This is where you connect your conclusion back to the point you are trying to make.

Theme: After reading the story, determine a possible theme for the story. Find evidence to back up your claim and then write an analytical paragraph.
