Getting to Know the Author:
Knowing background information about an author can often times help us understand the story better because author’s often times, “write what they know.” Read the biography about the author and then do the small assignment below.

Vocabulary:
Being familiar with the vocabulary in a story in important because if you don’t understand the words in the story then you won’t understand the story itself. Complete the vocabulary assignment below so that you are familiar with the words that will appear in the story.
Directions: Read through ALL the vocab words below so that you are familiar with these words and their definitions. Then pick 10 of the ones that you find the most interesting and write them in a sentence. The sentence must include context clues to what the word means.
Example: The loquacious boy ran down the hall making tons of noise.
solicit -make a solicitation or entreaty for something; request urgently or persistently
baroque -elaborate and extensive ornamentation in decorative art and architecture that flourished in Europe in the 17th century
phantasm -something existing in perception only
sagacious -acutely insightful and wise
paltry -contemptibly
fidelity -the quality of being faithful
allusion -passing reference or indirect mention
intemperate -excessive in behavior
fancy -imagine; conceive of; see in one's mind
malevolence -wishing evil to others
atrocity -an act of atrocious cruelty
equivocal -open to question
irrevocable -incapable of being retracted or revoked
vile -morally reprehensible
perpetual -continuing forever or indefinitely
unfathomable -impossible to come to understand
consummate -perfect and complete in every respect; having all necessary qualities
conflagration -a very intense and uncontrolled fire
pestilence -any epidemic disease with a high death rate
aversion -a feeling of intense dislike
chimera -a grotesque product of the imagination
woe -misery resulting from affliction
incumbent -necessary (for someone) as a duty or responsibility; morally binding
succumb -consent reluctantly
expedient -a means to an end; not necessarily a principled or ethical one
felicity -pleasing and appropriate manner or style (especially manner or style of expression)
allay -lessen the intensity of or calm
bravado -a swaggering show of courage
exult -feel extreme happiness or elation
consign -commit forever; commit irrevocably
