Getting to Know the Author:
Knowing background information about an author can often times help us understand the story better because author’s often times, “write what they know.” Read the biography about the author and then do the small assignment below.

Vocabulary:
Being familiar with the vocabulary in a story in important because if you don’t understand the words in the story then you won’t understand the story itself. Complete the vocabulary assignment below so that you are familiar with the words that will appear in the story.
Directions: Read through ALL the vocab words below so that you are familiar with these words and their definitions. Then pick 10 of the ones that you find the most interesting and write them in a sentence. The sentence must include context clues to what the word means.
Example: The loquacious boy ran down the hall making tons of noise.
venerable -impressive by reason of age
withered -lean and wrinkled by shrinkage as from age or illness
vigor -active strength of body or mind
mendicant -a pauper who lives by begging
obscure -not famous or acclaimed
scandalous -giving offense to moral sensibilities and injurious to reputation
desirous -having or expressing desire for something
ajar -slightly open
relate -give an account of
verge -a region marking a boundary
array -especially fine or decorative clothing
brocade -thick heavy expensive material with a raised pattern
visage -the appearance conveyed by a person's face
ponderous -having great mass and weight and unwieldiness
ghastly -gruesomely indicative of death or the dead
brazen -made of or resembling brass (as in color or hardness)
ashen -anemic looking from illness or emotion
eccentricity -strange and unconventional behavior
veracious -habitually speaking the truth
stigma -a symbol of disgrace or infamy
pester -annoy persistently
yonder -at or in an indicated (usually distant) place (`yon' is archaic and dialectal)
deem -keep in mind or convey as a conviction or view
revive -return to consciousness
effervescent -(of a liquid) giving off bubbles
beseech -ask for or request earnestly
repentance -remorse for your past conduct
astray -away from the right path or direction
impute -attribute or credit to
dotage -mental infirmity as a consequence of old age; sometimes shown by foolish infatuations
intoxicate -have an intoxicating effect on, of a drug
vogue -the popular taste at a given time
deferential -showing deference
complaisant -showing a cheerful willingness to do favors for others
dispute -take exception to
quaff -to swallow hurriedly or greedily or in one draught
exuberant -joyously unrestrained
decrepitude -a state of deterioration due to old age or long use
rheumatic -of or pertaining to arthritis
alight -to come to rest, settle
transient -lasting a very short time
bemoan -regret strongly
