Using Reason (Not Recall) to Learn Gross Skeletal Muscle Actions (Gyorkos, 2021)

There are many muscles in the appendicular skeletal muscle system that are acting on the skeletal system to move the body in space. To ask students to memorize all of the muscle actions would be an incredibly daunting and low level memorizing task. Not to mention, the amount of time that they would retain that information would be very short-lived! Therefore, instead of memorizing, I invite you to teach some easy-to-follow rules to help students reason (as opposed to recall) in order to predict muscle actions.

Collaborative Learning "Actin-Myosin Dance" Demonstrating the Process of Muscle Contraction in the Sarcomere (Kebede, 2022)

Students find the concept of muscle contraction at the sarcomere level challenging since it contains protein complexes whose role they find hard to understand in the context of the sliding filament model. This activity involves student volunteers that play roles that represent the process of muscle contraction at the level of the sarcomere. Five students are needed to complete a “dance” that represent Actin, Myosin, Troponin, Tropomyosin and Calcium. The dance simulates Myosin holding hands with Actin and pulling it to the M line. They are able to see that Calcium from the SR breaks the Troponin-Tropomyosin complex exposing the Actin active sites so that Myosin forms a cross bridge with Actin. This results in Myosin sliding Actin toward the center of the sarcomere.
