Community Involvement
Every high school student in Ontario must complete 40 hours of community involvement activities in order to receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). While this diploma requirement applies to students in grades 9-12, students in grade 8 can now begin accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9.
The purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage students to extend their skills beyond the classroom, utilize their interest and enthusiasm to benefit the community, gain valuable experiences working with volunteer groups and learning about service to people and organizations, and gather experiences for their personal resumes.
