Family and Consumer Science

Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) is an applied field of study in that it offers solutions to issues faced by individuals, families and communities. Its programs focus on the welfare of individuals, families and communities through enhancement of human potential concerning effective decision making. 

Purpose of FCS

The purpose of FCS is to prepare students to work with people as scientists, designers, counselors, educators, social workers, marketers and professionals in the food and nutrition field, as well as to be leaders in the community. This discipline enables people to implement creative adaptations to technological, economic, social, political and cultural changes that occur throughout the life span and are integral to success in the global world.

FCS Courses at GHS

The Family & Consumer Sciences department at Glastonbury High School currently offers courses in foods and nutrition aimed at the everyday consumer, professional cooking courses developed for students with an interest in the professional culinary arts, early childhood education and human development with opportunities for college credit, and apparel and textiles for students with an interest in careers in the fashion industry.
