 Mr. Newman

Michael Newman is a classically trained cellist from Southampton, Pennsylvania. He earned his Master’s Degree in cello performance from the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Michael was a recipient of the Marc von May Cello Scholarship and studied with distinguished cellist, Alan Stepansky. Michael received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Boyer College of Music at Temple University, under the tutelage of Udi Bar-David, a cellist in the Philadelphia Orchestra.

While studying at Peabody, he helped lead the Peabody Sinfonia which is a conductor-less string orchestra. The Peabody Sinfonia’s mission was to spread the joy of music all throughout Baltimore in places that don’t receive live music such as Rehabilitation Centers, Retirement Homes, Prisons and much more. His string quartet at Peabody won the honors award and studied with members of the Brentano String Quartet, Dover Quartet and the Julliard Quartet.

An accomplished orchestral musician, Michael currently serves as the assistant principal cellist in the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra. Also, he played with several community and professional orchestras, including the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Fenimore Chamber Orchestra, Warminster Symphony Orchestra, Southeastern Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra, Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey and Bryn Athyn Orchestra. In addition to being an avid chamber musician, Michael enjoys performing and collaborating with other musicians as a recording artist. As a soloist, he premiered two separate works for cello, written by composer Zach Gulaboff Davis.

In 2022, Michael graduated from West Chester University with a certification to teach music K-12 in Pennsylvania. Since then, he worked in the Council Rock School District, Wissahickon School District and currently teaches at the East Windsor Regional School District as one of their Elementary Orchestra Teachers. He has been teaching string instruments for 11 years and maintains a well-established music studio.
