About

Orchestra at Grace N. Rogers is a wonderful opportunity for 4th and 5th graders.  In orchestra, the students have the option to take violin, viola, cello or bass.  Each instrument has its own unique sound and contributes to the orchestral sound.  Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to grow as a musician and as a person.  Music is so healthy for the body and mind.

Grading

Students will receive a grade for orchestra.  Creating, Performing and Responding outline the way grading works for the year.  They will be graded on a 1-4 point scale system that reflects their contribution to learning and participating in orchestra.  Participation in group lessons, morning rehearsals and concerts are necessary in order to receive a complete grade. 

Lessons and Rehearsals

 Group lessons will happen every week for 35 minutes and a grade will be assigned for each lesson.  Lessons will challenge each player in a positive way. Every lesson is aimed to improve technique, expression and posture. On occasion, there will be a playing assessment to guide each player's progress. It is crucial that each player attends every lesson.

There will be one morning rehearsal (8-8:40), per grade, every week starting in the month of October.  Students will learn great leadership skills and be able to communicate with a group of their peers. 

Performing

Performing is a part of each and every musician’s journey.  Students will have the chance to create their own piece of music and share it among the rest of the students.  Students will also learn to improvise and be able to play a melody out of thin air.  During the school year, students will play a variety of different pieces depending on their skill level.  Different genres will be explored and enjoyed.  There will be two performances throughout the year.
