Davie County Schools’ New Davie High High Robotics Competition
On April 17, Davie County Schools held its 5th Annual Robotics Competition at Davie County High School. This year’s theme was entitled “New Davie High School.” The challenge mat was designed to incorporate plans for the new high school in Davie County. Each of the challenges was designed to incorporate activities that may occur in and around the new high school. Teams competed in challenges that tested their programming knowledge to complete a choreographed dance, parallel park for a driver’s ed test, run a 5K course and spin around after the football team won the 4A State Championship just to name a few. Two Davie County middle schools and six elementary schools competed in this year’s finale.
Teams were presented with 6 challenges before Christmas and another 7 were added in February to prepare for this competition, which required teams to build and program using Lego NXT Mindstorm robots at the elementary schools and EV3 Lego robots at the middle schools. Each team competed to earn as many points as possible and complete as many challenges in the allotted time. Challenges were judged by Chad Fuller, Davie County School Board Chair; Clint Junker, Davie County School Board Vice-Chair; Gary Bullard, Grey Engineering; Teresa Kines, Dean of Davidson County Community College Davie Campus; Joey Goodman, Program Director with Davidson County Community College; Timothy Younts, DCHS CTE Teacher; and Donna McNeil, DCS CTE Director. Spectators were able to follow the competition online through a live leaderboard. In the elementary school division, the Mocksville Terminators (Max Junker, Davis Byers, and Jhosue Solis-Romero) were crowned champions with a score of 300 points. Cornatzer Team Cougars (Dominick Mayhorn, Dylan Doss and Malachi Woodward) received runners-up award, and Mocksville Warrior Unicorns (Allie Williams, Skylette Koon and Tenia Davis) finished third.
In the middle school division, South Davie completed a sweep of all three awards. Team B.O.L.T. (Jake Linville, Nolan Crotts, Chandler Carter, Kenan Boswell) were crowned champions and had the evenings highest score of 305 points. Runners-up was the 48 Redstones (Justin Boardwine, Michael Rutherford, Baily Jordan, Makayla Phelps, and Kaitlyn Roscoe), and The Avengers (Dayanna Neely, Mirtha Martinez, Kayla Roscoe and Madelyn Kenney) took home third place honors.
New Davie High School Mat and Challenges Introduced
Challenges:
1. Travel to the track and run the 1600m as fast as you can for the conference track and field championships. Your run will be timed.
2. Deliver candy and soda to the concession stand. Follow the road to the end and use the bump sensor to come to a stop. Deliver the candy and soda to the concession stand (pause) and follow the road back to the student parking lot.
3. Follow the road to the stadium and park (follow line all the way to the parking spaces outside the stadium). Watch as Davie defeats Reagan in the 4A State Football Championship (pause 3 seconds), then travel to the War Eagle to spin around in celebration. Return to the student parking lot.
4. Davie is playing West Forsyth in soccer. Take the final penalty kick in the shootout to win (place ball on the center circle of Practice Field A). Kick the ball towards the pond. Return to the student parking lot.
5. The DHS band will be performing at the Art Smart Festival. Move band equipment from the auditorium to the stadium football field and return to the student parking lot.
6. Pick up a bridge built by the carpentry class in the CTE building. Push the bridge into place over the creek to access the environmental area. Then meet your science class in the student parking lot.
7. It’s a busy day at Davie High! First, swing through the classroom building to pick up a math take home test from Ms. London. Travel to the eagle for a pep rally. Next, pick up your tickets to the volleyball game at the ticket booth and travel to the gym to watch the volleyball team play. Rush back to the student parking lot to meet your mom for a ride home. *Robot should pause at each stop for at least 1 second.
8. DHS is building an amphitheater for outdoor events. Remove the trees and brush from the forest area to make room for the new addition. Return to the student parking lot.
9. Take your driver’s license test. Follow the road to the stadium parking lot. Show Mr. Mitchell how you parallel park in one of the two spaces (show parallel parking maneuver - back, forward, back). Return to the student parking lot to receive your license.
10. Ms. White has learned that the fish are dying in the pond. Travel to the classroom building to pick up supplies. Next, travel to the pond to test the water temperature of the pond. Record your findings and report back to the classroom.
11. Mr. Koontz is having a practice run for the cross country team. Using the 5K map of the cross country course, run the complete course as fast as you can.
12. Ms. Winchell has asked you to choreograph a dance for your Dance 3 class. Travel to the auditorium and show off your dance skills (3 distinct moves). Return to the student parking lot.
13. MS ONLY - You have been selected to participate in the run, throw, and kick competition at half-time of the football game. Travel to the stadium, throw a ball at the east end of the stadium, run as fast as you can to the west end and kick a ball. Return to the student parking lot.
November 18, 2014 - Skills Challenge!
This challenge is designed to prepare students for the Spring Challenges Coming Soon... Be on the lookout for the new theme.
Host Schools:
Cooleemee Elementary will host William R. Davie and Mocksville
Shady Grove Elementary will host Cornatzer and Pinebrook
William Ellis Middle will host South Davie and North Davie
Teams will participate in the following Stations (15 minutes at each station) to complete on-site challenges testing the following skills:
Station 1:
Distance in one shot: (no attachments) Students will need to program the robot to go a certain distance using math to get as close to the distance as possible.
Follow a Maze: Students will be asked to program the robot to navigate a maze using forward and turn move blocks.
Station 2:
Spin: Students will program the robot to go forward, spin (keeping atleast one wheel in the circle) and return to start.
Station 3:
Find a Line and Follow a Line: Students will program the robot to drive forward until the robot finds the line, pause (using a wait block to hold for 2 sec), go forward and follow a line to the end.
Station 4:
Bump and Reverse: Students will program the robot one time to drive until it "bumps" a wall, waits for 2 seconds, then moves away from the wall atleast 2 rotations.
* Depending on where the bump sensor is located (front or back of the robot) will determine forward or reverse.
Choose ONE of the following stations:
Station 5a:
Grab (gripper attachment with motor): Student will program the robot to drive up to a ball on a stand, grab the ball and return it to the start and release.
Station 5b:
Push (attachment of choice): Student will program the robot to drive up to a number of objects, collect them inside the attachment and push the pieces back to the start.
Staion 5c:
Find an object (ultrasonic sensor): Student will program the robot to drive up to an object and stop a certain distance away using the ultra sonic sensor.
*Students may use pre-programmed robots to expediate the challenges. For example: Find a line and follow the line pre-programmed to adjust distance when team gets to the station. If you have any questions about the November 18th Skills Challenge, please contact John Marshall.
