6th Annual Davie County Schools Robotics Challenge
On April 22, Davie County Schools held its 6th Annual Robotics Competition at Davie County High School. The six elementary schools and three middle schools all competed in this year’s event. The event was judged by Clint Junker (DCS Board of Education), Teresa Kines (Dean, DCCC – Davie Campus), Danny Cartner (Davie County Schools - Retired), and Gary Bullard (Grey Engineering). A special thanks to Davie County Schools’ instructional coaches Heather Ratledge, Kelly Myers, Christy Cornatzer, and Rebecca Marion, along with Davie County High School’s National Honor Society, who supported in various roles. This year’s elementary school theme was a throwback to the Mocksville Logistics Challenge. Pinebrook Elementary School claimed the top two spots with Robot Apocalypse (Chloe Ledford and Caleb McDaniel) taking first place overall and Explosion of Purple (Brianne Winfrey and Savannah Gouch) taking runner-up honors. The Diva Twins from Mocksville Elementary School finished in third place.
The three Davie County middle schools competed in a brand new event. Teams engineered and built their EV3 robots to collect golf balls and return them to their assigned bin. Teams competed simultaneously on a three-dimensional table, avoiding obstacles and other teams to collect the most balls for the win. This competition incorporated remote control and the sumo wrestling aspect from the previous challenges this year. JPR Robotics (Will Jones, Josh Pilcher, Josh Clark) from North Davie Middle School were crowned champions. South Davie Middle School’s Swag Sauce (Byron Jones, Hunter Snyder, Johnathan Moore) finished as runner-up and Little Tike Gamers (Chandler Carter, Kenan Boswell, Madelyn Kenney) finished third. Awards were also handed out for the Middle School Sumo, Dragster and Tug-of-War series. South Davie swept the series with # InsertCoolNameHere (Jake Linville, Nathan Linville, Nolan Crotts, Kaitlyn Roscoe) taking first place for the Sumo Challenge, Pro_Bots (Luke Snider, Luca Iacopi, John Vargas) taking first place for the Dragster Challenge and Swag Sauce taking first place in the Tug-of-War Challenge.
None of this would be possible without the support and tireless hours put in by the coaches of these robotics teams (CES: Teresa Carter and Christy Kauffman; CZES: Leah Hayes and Lisa Doss; MES: Kris Shepherd and Joe Ramsbotham; PES: Mary Winfrey and Brian Winfrey; SGES: Tina Pickett and Tammy Essic; WRD: Carrie Trivette and Kristy Coble; NDMS: Cindy Cline, Janet Dyson and Thomas Johnson; SDMS: Ben Baity and Emily Fanning; WEMS: Karen Martin).
