Ed Johnson - From Manteo to Murphy
Participants will use strings to measure the distances from various points in NC. They will then interpret the scale and find the approximate distance from those places. This exercise has been used by SS classes at SDMS to introduce the basic geography to students as well as place names they may not be familiar with. If time allows, we will also work with the Pythagorean Theorem to demonstrate how to apply it when estimating distances.
Ed Johnson - Name Game
The name game is designed to develop word search and attack skills. There are two columns of words, names and definitions. Participants will match the appropriate pair from each column. The matches may be by definition, phonetics, or some other connection. Participants are allowed to use dictionaries, suffix, root, and prefix charts. This has been used at SDMS for a staff meeting.

I currently use student portfolios in my Early Childhood classes to showcase the students work from the semester. These portfolios are then used at college interviews, scholarship interviews, and job interviews. I think that they can be used in any class. Students are required to maintain and update their portfolio throughout the semester. They are responsible for choosing their best pieces of work to showcase their abilities.
