*Be sure to read regular Control Room doc first*
as always, make sure the MOTU828 Interface is turned on and being recognized and selected by your chosen DAW
1. Patchbay:
For surround, we will not be using the MOTU 'main outs' - we will bypass the stereo monitor mixer (breaking the normal to the speakers) and patch analog outputs 1-6 to the speakers(the 3rd though 8th MOTU outputs on the patchbay):
2. Setting up the MOTU (as monitor controller)
Open up CueMix FX, which is the software connected with the MOTU interface. On the menu bar, click the file menu, choose "load hardware preset", and select "memesurround". You'll notice the monitor level control is now in 5.1 mode and the monitor indicator is lit under output pairs for analog 1-6 (the 3rd-8th outputs following the main outs):
If any of the monitor buttons under analog output pairs 1-6 are not lit, click them, and make sure you are on the memesurround preset.
This setup bypasses the PreSonus Monitor Station controller in the control room, so you can only control the monitor level with the 'monitor level' knob on the screen or the 'MAIN VOL' knob on the MOTU:
3. Software setup:
In Logic, go to Preferences>Audio and configure the surround output assignments as shown:
Then go to the channel strip, right click on the output (where it normally says 'Stereo Out'), and select 'Surround':
In Pro Tools, use the "meme--master" IO settings. It's easiest to select this in the create session dialog when making a session. You can also import these settings using "setup>I/O.." from the ProTools main menu bar.
The I/O setup should look like this:
Other software, utilize the same routing to create surround paths in Live, Max, etc. These programs may not have surround panners but one can route to output busses as described via sends and channel assignments.
