Summer Communications

Dear New & Returning Clinton Hill Students and Families,

We’ve made it once again to the end of the school year.  As a student, I thought the summer would never come.  As a teacher, I realized that there are people who look forward to summers more than students.  And now as a parent, this time in June that ends one school year and starts another has some bitter-sweetness, as we see our kids grow up so quickly!  I wish you and your families all the best as you head into whatever adventures, work, or laziness awaits you this summer.

For those of you new to Clinton Hill, welcome!   We are a school where we believe that all students can achieve at high levels, where students do the bulk of the thinking in class and where relationships are the foundation to student success and positive classroom culture.  We are excited to welcome you to our community and I look forward to meeting you in the upcoming months, if we have not met already.

Today we are sharing a lot of detailed and important information to guide you this summer and help you prepare for the start of the 2023-24 school year. We cannot wait to welcome you all back to school in September for another full, rich, and busy school year.   See below for an overview of what is in this email:

Please take some time to read through this information and reach-out with any questions. You can contact us at chmscoordinator@brooklynprospect.org or 718-783-1570. Our middle school office is open Monday through Thursday, 9AM-2PM, starting on July 21st, as our office will also be closed from July 3 - July 21.

Have a wonderful summer vacation!

Sincerely,

Matt Ellis

CHMS Classroom Pages

Visit CHMS Classroom Pages for whole school communications, useful links, homework and more!  We will be consolidating important information both in this update and all year to this on the site.

Summer Reading

We are excited to share these Summer Reading resources for all rising 7th and 8th graders here at CHMS. Each summer, we ask students to read a total of at least three texts during the months of July and August in order to maintain their strong literacy skills they have worked to build upon all year. Students should complete the activities in the packet and contribute to the 'CHMS Reads!' Flipgrid Wall in order to share about what they read! ELA teachers will collect Summer Reading packets in the fall, and students will be rewarded for completing this summer assignment.

Calendar of Important Dates

We are pleased to share our 2023-24 School Year Calendar!

In general, we seek to align our calendar to the New York City Department of Education in most places, and deviations are primarily due to us observing federal holidays that fall over a weekend or professional development days that do not align with our assessment calendar. Please note that on January 29, 2024, and June 8, 2024, Prospect Schools will be open while the DOE is closed—Families must arrange transportation for their child on these two days. Please contact your child's school if you have any questions or concerns.

We are excited about the upcoming school year and look forward to working together to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment for your child.

Uniforms

Our uniform policy strives to reduce a common source of adolescent stress and anxiety about what to wear to school or how their clothes might stack up against others' while offering flexibility and choice to ensure that each student is comfortable.   All CHMS middle school students are required to wear their school uniform daily, except on noted school-wide and grade-wide dress down days.   Below is a high-level summary.  Students may wear any solid, non-logoed blue, black, or khaki bottoms including sweats, joggers, unripped jeans, shorts, skirts, and or leggings.

Schedule Overview

Below is a draft visual of what you can expect your student’s schedule will look like.

Supply Lists

Here is a supply list broken down by grade level.  If you are having difficulties purchasing any of the materials please reach out to chmscoordinator@brooklynprospect.org

Living Environment/Biology Regents Exam

We are excited to announce that, starting in 2023-24, our students will take the Living Environment/Biology Regents Exam in 8th grade.  This is a course  that we currently offer in 9th grade but we are shifting it to Middle School to give students the opportunity to get a Regents exam and high school course credit under their belt before high school.  This will also give us the opportunity to further develop our K-12 Science scope of courses with an eye towards preparing all students for IB Science.  This move coincides with a shift to a new set of science standards across NY state, which will be assessed starting in 2024-25.  Not only will our 8th grade students gain more lab experience and get a head start on high school, but they will also gain better preparation for IB science as we will be able to offer innovative pre-IB science courses in 9th and 10th grade.   If you have any questions about this shift, please fill out this form so that we can get back to you with more information.

Required Start of Year Forms

At the beginning of the year, we will be requesting a family income form and residency survey with more information to follow.  If you would like to request an address change, please fill out the following form. Note: you must include proof of address. Proof of Address can include: lease agreement, utility bill (gas or electric) dated within the last 60 days, bill for cable TV service dated within the last 60 days, documentation or letter on letterhead from a federal, state, or local government agency dated within the last 60 days. If you do not have any of these items, please contact chmsregistrar@prospectschools.org

Additionally, all new students must provide a Medical Form. For new students and students turning 11 and 12 over the summer, your student must stay up to date on their immunizations. You can use the Medical Form to document immunizations as well. Students who need medication administered at school, please submit the General Medication Administration Form, the Allergy Medication Administration Form, and/or the Asthma Administration Form, depending on the medication your student needs administered. Students will not be permitted to be administered medication without these forms on file. You can also request all of the following forms at your pediatrician’s office.

New Family Summer Picnic

We are excited to host a mid-summer welcome picnic for all our new families (6th grade and new 7th and 8th grade), to Clinton Hill Middle School.  You and your families are welcome to attend  a casual picnic at Prospect Park where you can meet other students, families, and Principal Ellis.  This will take place on Thursday , August 10th from 3:00pm-5:00pm in the north part of the Long Meadow in Prospect Park, near Grand Army Plaza.  We invite you to bring your own snacks, blankets, or games.  No need to RSVP; just show up if you want.  We will send a follow up email closer to the date with the exact location.

Infinite Campus - Guardian & Student Portal

Prospect Schools uses Infinite Campus for our student information system (SIS) We use Infinite Campus to manage all of our core student information such as attendance, contacts, grades, health records, and schedules.  Students and families can utilize Infinite Campus to track grades and assignments, fees, student schedules, and more using their login information. If you do not have an Infinite Campus account yet, your unique account creation key and instructions for how to activate your account will be shared with you before the beginning of the school year.  If you need any Infinite Campus support, please reach out to chmsregistrar@prospectschools.org.

Information on Our Math Curriculum

For our new families especially, you may have some wonderings about our Math curriculum, and why we have all students taking the same Math 8 Course.   There are two resources (Detracking Math at PS; Illustrative Math One-Pager) created by our network Math lead, Joanna Lopez that outline some information about our 6-12 math course sequence, how it aligns with our mission and principles, information about the Illustrative Math curriculum, and the mindsets with which we approach Math education.
