Welcome CHMS students, families, and visitors! Below you will find our mission, teacher biographies, Google Classroom pages, syllabus, and other important information. We look forward to having a great 2024-2025 school year!
As CHMS Science Teachers, we seek to:
Promote equity in access to and interest in science and engineering, with special attention to the needs of groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM, including girls, LGBTQ+ and students of color.
Develop students’ curiosity about natural & physical phenomena.
Build students’ skill & independence in using experimentation & scientific reasoning to answer questions and explore new ideas.
Deepen students’ understanding of key concepts & facts in the life and physical sciences, as well as the connections between the sciences and other fields.
Develop students’ understanding of the applications of science, and to prepare them to participate actively in a society where scientific literacy is increasingly important in decision making.

In our classrooms, we engage students with big, meaningful questions about the world we live in. We introduce new topics with inquiry and experimentation, guiding students as they construct meaning from their observations. Our units center on applications and authentic tasks, connecting new ideas to important issues in the real world. We seek to balance alignment with the standards with responsiveness to student interests and questions, and we offer students choice when possible. We understand the importance of content-specific reading and writing skills in opening doors to further opportunities, so we systematically work on literacy in and through science. We are mindful of how scientific discourse has privileged the voices and work of white men, and therefore we seek to create inclusive classroom communities where all voices are respected, to ask questions and pose tasks relevant to a variety of life experiences, and to teach students about a diverse group of thinkers in our study of the history and practice of science.
