6th - Math
Welcome to 6th Grade Mathematics!
COURSE INFORMATION
In Sixth Grade Mathematics, students develop foundational skills with whole and rational numbers while engaging in problem-solving and algebraic thinking tasks. With Open Up Resources 6–8 Math, students learn that math isn’t just about memorizing rules, it’s about rolling up your sleeves and diving in. The curriculum is built around hands-on activities that help students understand mathematical concepts. This approach keeps students engaged and helps them apply math to the real-world.
Students regularly collaborate on activities and problem-solve in pairs or teams. This engagement helps students talk about math, learn from one another, push their thinking, and develop communication and collaboration skills, which they’ll need throughout their lives.

Mr. Hoffman (he/him)
Switching careers from the nonprofit sector, Mr. Hoffman joined CHMS in January as an academic tutor and then swiftly stepped up to be the 7th-grade math teacher to close out the year. He now sees that math, especially at the middle school level, is used in everyday life and is eternally grateful to his middle school teachers. You'll catch Mr. Hoffman on his bike, at the tennis courts or in Flushing eating delicious Asian cuisines.
