In 7th Grade Mathematics, students develop foundational skills with whole and rational numbers while engaging in problem-solving and algebraic thinking tasks. With Open Up Resources 6–8 Math, students learn that math isn’t just about memorizing rules, it’s about rolling up your sleeves and diving in. The curriculum is built around hands-on activities that help students understand mathematical concepts. For example, students studying equivalent ratios mix colored water solutions to understand why doubling and tripling produces the same shade of solution as the original. This approach keeps students engaged and helps them apply math to the real-world. Another feature of this curriculum is the peer collaboration and discourse that takes place in the classroom. Students regularly collaborate on activities and problem-solve in pairs or teams. This engagement helps students talk about math, learn from one another, push their thinking, and develop communication and collaboration skills, which they’ll need throughout their lives.
What can you expect as a parent?
Because the Open Up Resources 6–8 Math curriculum approaches math a bit differently than traditional textbooks, the materials your student brings home might look different than the worksheets full of math problems that you’re used to seeing. Please don’t be alarmed, as we’re confident this new approach is more engaging for students and supports deeper learning.
We encourage you to follow along at home by accessing resources designed for students and families. These resources:
help you understand what your student is learning in class
describe the big ideas your student will encounter over the course of each unit
provide an overview of the mathematics your student is learning
detail what to expect as the learning deepens
offer questions you can use at home to promote conversation around the math
Curious about what we will be learning about this year?
Unit 1: Scale Drawings
Unit 2: Proportional Relationships
Unit 3: Measuring Circles
Unit 4: Proportional Relationships and Percentages
Unit 5: Rational Number Arithmetic
Unit 6: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities
Unit 7: Angles, Triangles, and Prisms
Unit 8: Probability and Sampling
Students will need their Google Classroom login information to access content from student.desmos.com
Math will be a mix of digital and paper resources this year. In fact, we've partnered with Desmos as our math platform. If you're curious to see how Desmos integrated our curriculum, please click this link to see a preview! Desmos runs best on a computer/laptop/chromebook.
Desmos will be one of the many platform our class will be using this year to learn math. This platform facilitates interaction, experimentation, and project based learning.

This will be Mr. Sosanya's 7th year of teaching. He went to The City College of New York where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a minor in Black Studies. He fell in love with math when he felt it was most difficult in his middle schools years. A realization was made when he grew with continuous frustration whenever he got something wrong, but with this mindset, his love for math grew with each struggle. This mentality is something he hopes to share with the ones he teach. This year, will be his best!

Ms. Forbes has a Masters in Health Science, and bachelors from Brooklyn College in Youth Studies. She spent several years working in special education teaching students up to 21 years old. Ms. Forbes has a background in STEM with a love for subjects that tie in science and math. Physics, chemistry, and calculus are among her favorites. Middle school math provides key foundational mathematics instruction that are the building blocks to harder topics. She loves to see the growth among students as they progress throughout the school year. We have much to look forward to!
