High School Ranking Groups Update
"The DOE HS Admissions page updated their criteria for screened admissions by taking into consideration Charter School's top 15% average vs only the citywide top 15% averages. Based on this update Charter School students CAN also be eligible for the tiers/groupings at the school level (eg they are at the top 15% of their school). This means that charter school students have two chances to be considered in Tier 1 if they are at the top 15% of the citywide average, or at the top 15% at their school. Clinton Hill's average for its top 15% is about the same as the citywide; citywide top 15% is at or above 94.3%, and CHMS is at or above 94.5%. This concludes no changes for CHMS student's grouping when the school level percentages were taken into account. The DOE will always pick the best grouping for the child when both percentages are available."
High School Application Deadline Extended to Monday December 5th!
There is more time to apply to high school!
The new deadline to submit your high school application is Monday, December 5.
The deadline to apply to LaGuardia High School is Monday, December 5.
The date for submitting virtual auditions or other additional materials is Friday, December 9––learn what to prepare and how to submit at the links.
If you’ve already submitted your application, you’re all set! There’s nothing else you need to do. If you want to make any changes to your application choices, you can still do so by December 5. Please make sure to resubmit your application after you make any edits!
If you haven’t applied yet, we want your high school application! Remember: submitting an application by the deadline is your best chance to get an offer to a high school program of your choice.
You can apply and, if applicable, register for LaGuardia High School admissions one of three ways:
Online at MySchools.nyc—watch this video tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough,
Through your child’s current school counselor, or
Through a Family Welcome Center.
Want to learn more? Visit schools.nyc.gov/High and schools.nyc.gov/SHS to read and watch helpful videos about high school and LaGuardia High School admissions.

Five tips for building a balanced high school application
Submitting a balanced application is your best chance to get an offer to a program you want.
Tip 1. Choose 12 programs for your application, any of which you’d be happy to attend. Last year, 97% of students who listed 12 programs on their application got an offer to one of those programs.
Tip 2. Place your choices on the application in your true order of preference. This is always the best strategy: you will be considered for your first-choice program first, and if it isn’t possible to make you an offer there, you will be considered for your second-choice program next, as if it had always been your first choice. Additionally, schools will never know if they were your first or twelfth choice.
Tip 3. Consider program demand. If you are applying to some high-demand programs—in other words, programs where there are 3 or more applicants per seat—also apply to some programs that have 1 or 2 applicants per seat. You can see any program’s applicants per seat on its MySchools page and you can use the “Applicants Per Seat” filter to find schools with different levels of demand.
Tip 4. Know your priority group at each program. If the programs you’re applying to have more than one admissions priority group, be sure to apply to some programs where you are in priority group 1. You can also find this information on the programs’ MySchools pages.
Tip 5. Consider a balance of admissions methods. Finally, if you are applying to some programs that use a screened or audition admissions method, consider also applying to some programs that use an open or educational option (ed. opt.) admissions method.
Don't forget to submit your balanced application by December 1. Need support with your MySchools account or your application? We’re here to help! Talk to your child’s school counselor or contact a Family Welcome Center.

Screened Admission Groups
Screened Admission Groupings are now available on student's MySchools account.
**Groupings are calculated by averaging MESH (Math,ELA,Science & Humanities) grades from semester 1 and 2 of student's 7th grade year.**
Selection Criteria for Screened Admissions
Screened programs will admit the top-performing applicants from across each middle school and citywide. Students will be admitted to screened programs in group order, starting with students in group one.
Students fall into a screened admissions groups based on the average of their final seventh-grade core course grades (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies). This average must fall into the top percentage of students citywide or at a student’s school in order to fall within a certain admissions group.
These are the average grades needed to fall into the different groups citywide:
Group 1 (Top 15%)- Student's overall average in MESH classes of at least : 94.33
Group 2 (Top 30%)- Student's overall average in MESH classes of at least : 90.25
Group 3 (Top 50%)- Student's overall average in MESH classes of at least : 83.50
Group 4 (Top 70%)- Student's overall average in MESH classes of at least : 76.75
*Students with an average lower than a 90 will not fall into Group 1, even if they are in the top 15% of their DOE public school. This will be the case for students with an average lower than an 80 for group 2, lower than a 75 for group 3, and lower than 65 for group 4.
If there are more applicants in group one than available seats, students from group one will be randomly selected for seats using the random number linked to each applicant’s application. If all students in group one can be accommodated at a school, students in group two will be considered next; if there are more applicants in group two than remaining available seats, then students in group two will be randomly selected for available seats. This will continue with subsequent groups until all seats are filled.
Applicants can see which screened admissions group they are in on their MySchools profile. On the dashboard, click on “Edit profile” just above your child’s name. Scroll down to see the screened admissions group.
Ninth grade applicants to tenth grade seats will be grouped based on their final eighth-grade grades.
How are offers made to screened programs that are participating in Diversity in Admissions (DIA) and do not have an assessment?
At screened programs that have a diversity in admissions (DIA) and do not have an assessment, students in group one who are eligible for DIA are considered first for DIA seats. If there are not enough applicants eligible for DIA in group one to fill DIA seats, students in group two who are eligible for DIA will be considered next. This will continue until all DIA seats are filled.
Where can I learn if specific screened programs require additional assessments, and how to complete them?
A small portion of high schools may also require applicants to complete a school-based assessment, such as an essay. A list of these schools is available at our Assessments for Screened Schools webpage.

WELCOME BACK!
September 2022
Dear 8th Grade Families,
Welcome back! I hope that you had a lovely and overall relaxing summer and a great start to this new year. My name is Kamille Patrick-Bennett, the Middle School Counselor, and I will also serve as your liaison throughout your child’s high school application process.
First, I’d like to start by assuring you that all 8th grade students at BPCS are automatically given a seat in our 9th grade class. Over the years, a great majority of our former 8th grade students chose to continue at Brooklyn Prospect High School. Our International Baccalaureate (IB) Program prepares students for success in college and beyond through a rigorous, internationally-minded curriculum. Almost all BPCS IB graduates go on to attend a 4-year college, some of which are among the top universities in the country. There will be many great opportunities to learn more about our high school program over the coming months!
In addition, we are here to support you in an administrative capacity should your student decide to apply to other high schools. At BPCS, families are primarily responsible for obtaining the knowledge and information on other NYC high schools. We are not trained to offer guidance about other programs, however, the Department of Education’s website is filled with information and resources that may help you to begin to identify and narrow down schools and programs that will fit your child’s needs and interests. The New York City High School Directory is available online via this link ) or through the family facing MySchools website.
We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the NYC DOE High School Admissions Calendar and Events which is available both through the website linked as well as here. Please note that I have included a rough timeline from now until December. You will notice that the first fast approaching deadline is registration for the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) and auditions for LaGuardia High School. The SHSAT is required for the application process to NYC Specialized High Schools. Students who wish to register for the SHSAT and/or audition at LaGuardia will be able to start doing so once Creation Codes/Pin Numbers are made available through the MySchools website.
Lastly, I would like to share some next step items and suggestions for families interested in participating in the high school application process.
Sign up for the high school and Specialized High Schools email lists.
Watch the DOE videos! They cover how offers are made and how admissions to specialized high schools work. Videos are available on the DOE NYC HS Enrollment website.
Plan to attend a high school virtual fairs and visit websites.
Create an account in MySchools! Families can create an account in the family-facing MySchools site at any time and once you receive your child’s Welcome Letter, they may be added to your account in MySchools. Many families have been reaching out to receive their child’s account creation code (also known as “PIN code”) as well as the student ID number (OSIS number). Please be patient with your requests as we do not have access to this information yet.
Register for the SHSAT and/or LaGuardia High School auditions on Thursday October 6th (Pending Account Creation Codes/Pin Numbers arrival)! Students who are interested in any of the specialized high schools can register for the SHSAT and/or LaGuardia auditions using the family-facing MySchools site. The registration deadline is Friday, November 4th!
All registered students will take the SHSAT on November 17,19 or 20, 2022.
For more information about the process please read the NYC SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS STUDENT HANDBOOK
Explore schools and programs! Families can use MySchools to search for schools and programs. I encourage families to explore many schools and programs, including some you may not know about yet. Just go to myschools.nyc, scroll all the way down, and click on “Start Browsing.” Families can choose their preferred language from the upper right hand corner. Access digital version here
Contact admissions@brooklynprospect.org for any questions about our High School Admissions process! (Note: Current 8th grade students do not need to submit a new School Mint application for 9th grade - re-enrollment is required ) More information about BPCS HS Admissions events will be available on our website at https://www.brooklynprospect.org/admissions/ and will be emailed out to all of our families from our Admissions Team!
I understand that this process is long and trying, but please know that the DOE website has created a hub for all the resources you will need. Should you have any additional questions about the DOE application process, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to connecting with you and your student this year during your search.
