What We Do‎ > ‎

Pare & Share
At this popular family service event, families bring in vegetable donations and chop the vegetables in the Broadmeadow cafeteria for delivery to the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter in Boston.  Each grade is responsible for a different vegetable.  All vegetables are bagged and weighed so that we can see if we can beat the previous year's donation.  Even if you can't make it to the event, please send in your vegetable donation to school; the Pine Street Inn counts on this donation each year.

Holiday Toy Drive
A collection is run after Thanksgiving to collect new, unwrapped toys for the holidays.  At the end of the collection, a Wrapping Party is held after school so that students can wrap the presents in clear bags and decorate the bags with stickers.  Students also make holiday cards.  All of the toys and cards are delivered to the Mary Eliza Mahoney Family Shelter in Boston.

Cradles to Crayons
Each spring, the schools in Needham participate in a town-wide collection for Cradles to Crayons.  Broadmeadow runs a collection drive for children's toys, clothes and books and then Broadmeadow families can work at the Needham High School to sort the donations.

Book Pals
For many years, we have had a partnership with the Winthrop School in Dorchester.  Each year, Broadmeadow families donate their used books.  A Book Swap is held so that children that donated a book can pick out a "new" book to take home.  All remaining books are donated to the Winthrop School to be used for their classrooms and summer reading programs.

Student Service Club
Open to Broadmeadow 3rd to 5th graders, the Student Service Club meets after school for a few weeks with Broadmeadow's Service Learning Coordinator, Heather McCarthy (5th grade teacher).  The students research charities they are interested in, pick a charity and complete a service project for that charity.  Students can also sign up to work on a Publicity team or an Event team for any of the four PTC-run service events.  Publicity teams will work with Mrs. McCarthy on creating posters for the service events and advertising the event at an All-School Meeting.  Event teams will work with parent volunteers on the day of the event.  This club is free, but registration is required.  Flyers will be sent home with more information about registration.
