Camera-- film

In order to learn about exposure, depth of field, and film, students will need to bring an adjustable 35mm SLR (single lens reflex camera). Manual cameras like the Pentax K1000, Canon AE-1, Promaster 2500PK, the Minolta SRT101, or the Vivitar 3800 are great starter cameras. Electronic/Automatic SLR versions are great too if they have a manual mode and adjustable features. Or you could use a point-and-shoot automatic camera too, you just wouldn't have as much flexibility. Batteries are necessary for manual and electronic SLR cameras so check instruction manual or google it to find battery type.

If you ask around you should be able to find one to borrow from family/friends and can often find one on Ebay or Amazon but make sure the listing states "guaranteed to work" -- cameras are needed in class at the beginning of week 2.

Camera-- digital

In addition to traditional film photography, you will learn the basics of digital photography and Adobe Photoshop so you will also need access to a basic point and shoot digital camera (like a Nikon cool pix or Canon ELPH or even the next level up like a Canon Powershot SX610) or a digital SLR (like Canon EOS Rebel SL1 or Nikon D3100) or a cellphone camera

Camera rental

You are able to rent a camera through the class as well. Ideally you would have access to your own camera but if there is a large group of students who need to borrow a camera then you may need to share which means you would have to meet up with your partner on a weekend to exchange the camera so both people would be able to do their assignment. It does not cost anything to rent it but you do need to have your parent/guardian sign the rental form (found here).

(Interested in researching cameras before making a purchase, you can look through this site: www.kenrockwell.com)

Shooting assignments

Almost all shooting will be done outside of school hours, usually assigned over the weekend and may require traveling to various locations in the area. It is important that students plan their time accordingly in order to meet professional deadlines

Student expectations

Students should participate fully during class (take thorough notes, follow directions, help maintain a safe lab, meet deadlines, etc...) and ask questions when they are unsure of something. They should have an open mind, have patience, work as a team, try new things and be respectful of others opinions and ideas. They should review the class website and Google Classroom on a regular basis to help them organize their time and complete assignments. Considering this is a hands-on studio course, students should expect to work after school when necessary to meet the demands of projects and the photographic process. Open Studio from 2:30-3:30 most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Be clean- Be safe- Be smart ............. Be kind- Do what's right- Try

Additional reminders

1) Please be on task at all times and help maintain the classroom by cleaning up supplies, putting all supplies away, and making sure all garbage gets thrown out, etc....

2) Listening to music in class is limited to only a few activities at this time (reading and writing assignments and digital edits); if listening to music helps you read and/or write, you are allowed but remember you can only listen to music-- there should be no videos or other shows on your screen and please check in with me first.

3) At times we will have overlapping projects as we start one project and finish up another. If you are between activities please make sure you are doing something related to class-- we have many photography publications available in the classroom and you can access a variety of art blogs and websites under "web stuff"-- cell phones should be off during class. When in doubt please ask.
