Scrapbook Project:
Studying various qualities of composition, camera technique, and point of view allows us to broaden our understanding of "good" photography and gives us insight into what is possible. The more we look and analyze, the more we will be able to capture and create.
We need to think about what we will shoot and how can we have strong composition; there are some tips, tricks and approaches that can help give more wow factor and better impact to our work - to give it more polish and give it a more professional effect.
Let’s look at how we can do this
Part 1: Find an outstanding example for 5-10 of the 25 listed lens/approaches/techniques listed below. Create a slideshow to showcase your findings thinking about organization, headings, color palette and layout design of presentation. See slideshow attached below for photo examples of each. Click here to see presentation
Part 2: Write an analysis for each; analysis of "why" should be more than just why you like it; it can include why you like it but your writing should focus on why the photo is successful based on elements of good photography and composition that have been highlighted in class discussion. Qualities of good photography = approaches, techniques, and styles that equate to dynamic images.
Descriptors
1) Photograph taken with a normal lens (like normal eyesight - - replicates size and distance as the eye sees it )
2) Photograph taken with a macro lens (magnify - allows us to see and explore things in new ways )
3) Photograph taken with a wide angle lens (wider than normal eyesight- used for landscape and interior spaces)
4) Photograph taken with a fish-eye lens (can see up, down, all around-- curves at top and bottom to fit everything in)
5) Photograph taken with long lens/telephoto lens (zoom in-- let's you get close from afar)
6) Photograph with an unusual camera angle (adds interest to composition; angles other than standard eye level; new point of view; unexpected )
7) Photograph with a Dutch tilt (viewpoint as if tilting your head slightly- can be dynamic like high fashion or be distorted to create uneasiness)
8) Photograph with strong visual pattern/ repetition (something repeated throughout; interesting details)
9) Photograph with strong texture (adds interests-- implies what it feels like to the touch)
10) Photograph with stopped fast action (freeze a moment)
11) Photograph with blurred movement (movement adds interest; blurring is intentional and works visually)
12) Photograph with great depth of field (great distance and many thing in focus within picture plane -- control in camera)
13) Photograph with shallow depth of field (short distance with few things in focus-- control in camera)
14) Photograph with framing (elements of composition that crop off the sides and frames out main focal point-- creates interest)
15) Photograph with rule of thirds (main focal point off center; negative space enhances composition)
16) Photograph with strong diagonal lines (use of directional lines that create strong structure; eye follows lines throughout composition or to main focal point)
17) Photograph with graceful curved lines (directional lines that create strong structure; eye follows lines throughout composition or to main focal point)
18) Photograph heavily weighted towards bottom (elements at bottom that help to add unity and balance; can be weighed down with objects or darker values )
19) Photograph with strong dynamics (visual energy; many things to look at but not chaotic; eye movement throughout image; interesting details)
20) Photograph that tells a story (visual clues to what is happening)
21) Photograph with a strong emotional impact (mood/feeling through visuals, lighting, color, etc..)
22) Photograph with dominate reflections (adds dynamic impact to imagery; but not distracting/awkward/confusing)
23) Photograph with dominate shadows (adds dynamic impact to imagery; but not distracting/awkward/confusing)
24) Photograph with silhouette (light stronger behind object so creates shadow outline; needs interesting details and negative space)
25) Photograph with high contrast (dynamic impact because of black and white elements)
