In this class having taken Drawing and Acrylic painting and/or Drawing and Watercolor painting, you will further explore and experiment with various painting trends and multiple media. Painting mediums, textural additives and additional materials and techniques will be utilized to introduce a variety of approaches to build upon your 2D problem solving. As part of this course, you will experience the creative process individually, as a means of artistic experimentation and expression; exploring various concepts and how the mediums you use can enhance your expression.
TOPICS/SKILLS TO BE EXPLORED
- Historical and contemporary artists/artwork relating to the subjects, media and processes learned in class
- The process of brainstorming, sketching and planning to make conceptual connections
- Explore the use of additive mediums for acrylic paint while using different methods to apply pigment
- Use a variety of substrates to paint on - paper, canvas, board, material etc.
- Make pigments and focus on using variety of hues including unconventional ones
- Utilize the basic elements and principles of design & composition
- Review as needed: Color mixing: Mixing neutrals, shades, tints, hues and skin tones
- Critique and reflection by discussion and writing about your own work or the work of other artists
• Approximately 4-5 projects (100 pts. each) - usually 2-4 weeks each depending on complexity (longer term projects may count twice)
• Drawing Assignments and planning sketches (10-25 pts.each) - Very important for success of projects in this class. Drawings are required for the exploration of ideas, planning of your projects as well as practice for use of design elements and observation
• Class discussion/analysis and written statements (20 pts.each) - Written commentary as a means of expressing artistic observations, analysis of other artists' work and expression of your own ideas and artistic exploration.
• Studio Maintenance and Safety - Take part in daily clean up of space, tools and materials as per instruction and safety precautions
• Overall Participation/Performance/Effort (100 pts. per quarter) - Based upon your effort on projects, assignments, meeting deadlines, following instructions and safety precautions, contribution to class discussions and attendance.
• Final Project (Exam)- Major project completed during class time and exam block.
FINAL is ⅕ of overall course average. Each quarter is worth ⅖.
