In this class you will explore creative concepts and materials as they relate to fine art drawing and watercolor. We will look to artists of the 21st Century as well as key historical artists, art styles and cultural techniques relative to our projects. As part of this course, you will experience the creative process both individually and as a means of artistic expression exploring various concepts, while further developing your drawing and painting skills.
TOPICS/SKILLS TO BE EXPLORED
- Historical , cultural and contemporary artists/artwork relating to the subjects, media and processes learned in class
- The design process of brainstorming, sketching and planning for making conceptual connections
- Utilize the basic elements and principles of design in various drawing and water based media
- Using hatching techniques and building up values in various translucent water media
- Learn techniques and theory of painting with watercolor
- Color mixing: Mixing neutrals, tints & shades, cool vs. warm
- Develop critical awareness of your own artwork and the work of other artists
1st Quarter: Use drawing materials to create observational and expressive drawings.
DRY & WET DRAWING MEDIA : Inks, marker, pencil, fine line work vs. loose areas, working in reverse: white on black etc.
2nd Quarter: Practice watercolor techniques and develop finished watercolor paintings
WATERCOLOR Painting- Watercolor, gouache and/or tempera painting with illustrative inks. Using water media & brushes additives for watercolor effects.
• Approximately 4-5 projects (100 pts. each) - usually 2-4 weeks each depending on complexity (longer term projects may count twice)
• Sketchbook/Drawing Assignments, skill practice and planning sketches (10-25 pts.each) - Very important for success of projects in this class. Sketches and practice are required for the exploration of ideas, planning your projects as well as practice for media techniques
• Written Critiques and Statements (10-20 pts.each) - Written critiques as a means of expressing artistic observations and ideas. It is also important for artists to be able to communicate their ideas and talk about their own artwork verbally or in written form.
• Studio Maintenance and Safety - Take part in daily clean up of space, tools and materials as per instruction and safety precautions
(• Progress Checks - (Workdays) (2-5 pts. each) - Periodic progress checks especially IF WE ARE working remotely. Post photo of your project to Google Classroom at the end of class )
• Overall Participation/Performance/Effort (100 pts. per quarter) - Based on effort on projects, assignments, meeting deadlines, following instructions and safety precautions, contribution to class discussions and attendance
• Final Project (Exam)- Major project completed during class time and exam block
FINAL is ⅕ of overall course average. Each quarter is worth ⅖.
