A technique used in perspective to create the illusion of an object or figure receding strongly into the distance or background. Foreshortening of the human figure was perfected during the Italian Renaissance. Note the outstretched hand and arm of Michelangelo's painting of the bearded figure.
You often see foreshortening used in superhero comic books where drawn figures are in more dynamic poses.

It helps to start with cylinders or boxes going back into space. Then draw the figure within those forms, reshaping them to become arms or body, etc.
