COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this class you will explore creative concepts and materials as they relate to current drawing and painting trends in in the 21st Century as well as look back to key historical artists and art movements. A variety of drawing media as well as acrylic paint, mediums, and textural additives will be utilized to introduce a variety of approaches to 2D problem solving. As part of this course, you will experience the creative process both individually, as a means of artistic expression exploring various concepts while further developing your drawing and painting skills.

TOPICS/SKILLS TO BE EXPLORED

- Historical and contemporary artists/artwork relating to the subjects, media and processes learned in class

- The process of brainstorming, sketching and planning to make conceptual connections

- Utilize the basic elements and principles of design

- Drawing human figure accurately using proper proportions

- Color mixing: Mixing neutrals, shades, tints, hues and skin tones

- Stretch and prepare your own canvas

- Using perspective and siting to draw objects properly in space

- Critique and reflection by discussion and writing about your own work or the work of other artists

COURSE WORK:

1st Quarter: DRY MEDIA & ACRYLIC : Pastels, charcoal, color pencils, color mixing and theory

2nd Quarter: ACRYLIC Painting- On canvas and other surfaces, planning tonal values, underpainting, using mediums, modeling paste etc.


Course Requirements

• Approximately 4-5 projects (100 pts. each) - usually 2-4 weeks each depending on complexity (longer term projects may count twice)

• Drawing Assignments and planning sketches (10-25 pts.each) - Very important for success of projects in this class. Drawings are required for the exploration of ideas, planning of your projects as well as practice for use of design elements and observation

• Class discussion/analysis and written statements (20 pts.each) - Written commentary as a means of expressing artistic observations, analysis of other artists' work and expression of your own ideas and artistic exploration.

• Studio Maintenance and Safety - Take part in daily clean up of space, tools and materials as per instruction and safety precautions

• Overall Participation/Performance/Effort (100 pts. per quarter) - Based upon your effort on projects, assignments, meeting deadlines, following instructions and safety precautions, contribution to class discussions and attendance.

• Final Project (Exam)- Major project completed during class time and exam block.

FINAL is ⅕ of overall course average. Each quarter is worth ⅖.
