Second Grade Newsletter 11/25/2012

What an eye-opening experience it was to see first hand what happens to our recycled items.  A big thank you to Alpine Waste and Metech for taking the time to learn about the human impact and the adaptations people are trying to make to preserve our natural resources. The companies truly care about what is happening to our waste and trying to make.  Our lunch at KFC was a sight to see and the management and our parent volunteers were just fabulous with serving, cleaning and in general just being so kind to all of the students.  It was so fun to see us take over KFC’s lobby!!!

This week we will begin our first Problem Based Learning on Prairie Dogs and their impact on the environment.  We will be putting the students in collaborative groups to work as a team toward a common solution to present to a panel next Tues. Dec.  4th.  We will be utilizing Web 2.0 tools to help the students make a presentation of their understanding of the situation and what they propose as a solution.  Mr. Marshall and Ms. Caulderon will be assisting us this week in helping the students find resources, follow a rubric and prepare for questions from the panel.  We ask that all students come dressed “professionally” on presentation day.  We will stream it live and also we have planned a parent presentation on Thursday from 6:00 pm. to 7:30 p.m. in “The Commons”!

Thanks to the parents that came on our field trip and helped supervise in our 3 events in 1 day!  You are the best!

How can you help?!?!

Ask your child about the prairie dog and what their group is thinking.  Why are they presenting this?  How will they present it?  etc.
