Looking back, and looking ahead

This year, our Secondary two boys learned how to develop various character traits and life skills through the Lighthouse Ministry.

They started the year exploring what INTERGRITY meant and how to maintain integrity in their everyday lives. They were treated to a movie where we discussed the topic “HEROES” – it was an inspiring movie that traces the life of a farm boy from his early days in the US south to finally becoming a heroic officer in the USA Navy. The boys were challenged to think about who their heroes were and how they could be aspired to be like one. They learned about PARENT-TEEN COMMUNICATIONS and had a go at wearing mum’s and dad’s shoes and had role-play in class. In the session “SOCIAL GRACES”, the boys learned about dining and social etiquette and were treated to pizzas. In the second half of the year, the boys discussed issues relating to SELF ESTEEM and learned positive self-affirmation; they learned about ENDURANCE and how to preserve despite difficult circumstances. In the last term of the year, they had a GOAL SETTING exercise and learned how to manage exam related issues through STRESS AND TIME MANAGEMENT.

All in all, it was a fruitful time for parents-trainers and the boys and we have indeed grown together in the area of personal development.

Looking ahead – the Lighthouse Ministry will continue to offer Personal Development programs to the incoming Secondary two boys in 2010. We will tailor our program along the pillars of our school values – RICE – Respect, Integrity, Commitment and Excellence. We welcome all parents to come and help impart these lessons to the boys. We look forward to getting to know new friends and reacquaint with old ones in the year ahead.

PD Lesson 3: Hero

3 Mar 2009

The boys watched selected clips from the Movie “Men of Honour” and discussed the qualities of a Hero.  They had a great time watching the clips and clapped and cheered when the protagonist overcame all odds and became a Hero.  2 Timothy 4:7-8 were shown to the boys “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Therefore there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord … will give to me …”

PD Lesson 2: Parent-Teen Communication

17 Feb 2009

The students learned to understand the importance of empathy in building relationships, particularly in building parent – teen relationships. They have learned to be able to step into their parents’ shoes to view things from their perspectives.  They have also learned to build bridges and not walls and various skills in communicating their needs to their parents.

PD Lesson 1: Integrity

The students learned to understand the importance of integrity as a personal character trait.  Through class discussion, story telling and activities, the students learned the integrity of being truthful, responsible, uncompromising, self confident and trustworthy.  They also learned from Proverbs 11:3 “The integrity of the upright shall guide them; but the deceit of the unfaithful shall destroy them.
