There are no sports on a dead planet.
Environmental sustainability is not just a goal, it’s a responsibility and core value to the 2025 Canada Games. As a sport system, and a major sporting event, we have the unique opportunity to make an impact far beyond the field of play. An extensive list of environmental initiatives is planned for the Games. Browse through to learn what happens to dining hall leftovers, how to recycle your pin plastic bags, what venues you can get to by walking trails, and more.
The Games’ main sustainability objectives are:
To Minimize the Games’ Negative Environmental Impacts
To Track the Games’ Negative Environmental Impacts
To Promote Environmental Action and Awareness
To support the delivery of this extensive sustainability plan, a team of Sustainability volunteers, coined as the “Green Team”, will be on-site at competition venues and the Games village. Their role, providing on-the-ground support for environmental initiatives, will ensure measures are in place to deliver on our ambitions sustainability plan.
Additionally, we will not provide bottled water and Gatorade so make sure you bring your own refillable bottle and use the various water refilling stations and jugs to fill your bottle in the dining hall, at the bus mall and at venues.
All of this would not be possible without the significant support of MMSB (Multi-Materials Stewardship Board), the Presenting Partner of the 2025 Canada Games Sustainability Program, and Heave Away the Official Waste Hauler and Waste Audit provider. These partnerships have further enabled the Games’ ability to deliver on these key environmental objectives.
In the spirit of competition, hydration, and environmental sustainability, the 2025 Canada Games is introducing the inaugural Green Cup. Participation is easy:
Attach the Fill it Forward, QR code sticker (found on your bed) to your favourite reusable water bottle.
Download the Fill it Forward app, and join your respective provincial or territorial team when prompted.
Use the Fill it Forward app, scan your QR code sticker every time you reuse your bottle, and contribute to your Province or Territories total refills
Each scan documents a contribution to waste and single-use plastic diversion, makes a 2-10 cent donation to one of Fill it Forward's 8 water security charities, and enters you into a prize draw.

Water Refill stations are located at all venues and at the Games Village. Be sure to keep your refillable bottle with you at all times as you won’t find single use water bottles at the Village.
