History Game

My show Dancing With History at the University of Idaho Prichard Gallery in Moscow, Idaho in fall 2015 was divided into two sections: one for pieces incorporating drawings made in Spain, and one for pieces that included drawings from the immediate surrounding region: North Central Idaho/Eastern Washington. At the entrance to the show I place modified maps that marked the places I had gone to draw: one for Spain, one for the home region.

For the regional section I devised a History Game: I made 50 or so “cards” with details cropped from my large artwork printed on one side, and on the other text identifying the small town or museum where the subject in the detail was drawn. If I thought the subject might be a challenge to recognize, either because my drawing was minimal, or the subject itself could be unfamiliar to a modern viewer, I also described the object. At a small table in the gallery people were invited to deal five cards off the top of the deck, image side up, text hidden. They earned points by providing correct identifying information (completely on the honor system). Those who got at least four cards right could sign their names on a list of Regional History Aces…. Docents leading children through the gallery used the cards in another way: each child received a card and then went hunting to find where the detail existed in the large artwork. I hoped the cards would encourage viewers, young and old to go exploring and visit our region’s small museums.

Photos of the large artwork in the exhibition are included in the Dances With History section of this website.
