Dances with History

Europe:

This section contains work made from 2014 onward. I retired from teaching at the start of 2014. Free to travel, I structured trips in 2014, 2016 and 2018 to regions in Spain and France famous for Romanesque architecture: Castilla-Léon and Soria in Spain; Burgundy, Auvergne and La Poitou in France. But I didn’t only draw at Romanesque sites, I drew whatever caught my eye along the route; I also deliberately planned visits to cities famous for architecture from other periods: Burgos, Trujillo, Jaen, and Amiens particularly charmed me. My trip in 2018 included a week in Lisbon.

At home in my studio, making the artwork you see here, I gave myself permission to mix my European drawings freely, arranging them however they seemed to fit together, independent of the subject’s physical location.

Within a 100 miles from Home:

Starting in 2014, I also set out to draw historic architecture and artifacts that could be seen within a day’s drive from my house. I live twenty miles from the Idaho/Washington State border near the base of the Idaho Panhandle. On my trips I looked for the oldest buildings in small towns and visited tiny museums. Wood and brick are the dominant building materials here. Museums generally focus on 19th century metal and wood tools; some present splendid leather Indian artifacts. Having drawn so much stone sculpture and architecture in Europe, I enjoyed responding to the shapes of things made with different materials.
