West Virginians at Gettysburg

West Virginians at Gettysburg-Youtube Video

West Virginians visiting Gettysburg will see 4 memorials erected by the state in honor of West Virginia Union soldiers. However, they will see no monuments to the majority of West Virginians at the battle--the soldiers who were part of the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of Gen. Lee. Of the Union units at Gettsyburg from West Virginia, Artillery Co. C was from Ohio; the Ist WV Cavalry had about 32% West Virginians, 68% were from other states; the 7th WV Infantry was about 40% non-West Virginian. Only the 3rd WV Cavalry was mostly West Virginians. Of the Confederate units listed below, while containing many from present-day Virginia, a large portion is from West Virginia counties.
