Washington County

This list of Washington County, Ohio, men who enlisted in West Virginia regiments came from "Volunteers of Washington Co., Ohio, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865", compiled by Charles H. Newton, published in 1913.

Volunteers of Washington County, Ohio : war of the rebellion 1861-1865

The book says that there are 368 men listed as being in West Virginia units, but I must have missed a few as I only have 361 names in this list. Buell's Battery, which was Company C of the 1st West Virginia Light Artillery regiment came from Washington County. They have a monument at Gettysburg provided by the state of West Virginia, though West Virginia's actual artillery units at Gettysburg, which were Confederate, have none.

Postscript: I found the following additional soldiers-

Sayres, William              11th               A

Alberry, Anthony             2nd Cav.       E

McCowan, Isaac S.        4th Cav.        G

I have also changed a listing from the book, which was in error. Henry Fletcher was not in the 9th "Cavalry" as listed in the book, as there was no 9th Cavalry, but rather he was in the 9th Infantry, so I have corrected the error. Another corrected entry: Silas Baldwin is listed as a member of the artillery, but no company listing. He is listed as Co. C in the adjutant general's report in 1865.

Infantry is simply denoted here by the number.
