Camp Chase vols. 55-57

This is obviously a compilation from other sources and contains names of West Virginians that are duplicated in other Camp Chase Books, so I am listing below only the names I don't have recorded on other pages, to the best of my ability to compare and exclude. "Auxiliary Register, Old No. 4, Military Prisoners, Camp Chase O., Prisoners, Received Feby 1862 to Aug 25, 1863, [sh]ows Date received, Rank, Organization or Residence and generally Disposition in brief, Alphabetical order, About 7000 names." The names I've listed below are only those marked "citizen".

If you see a name of interest to you please check the original source page number, as I included as much information as I could, but some is not very legible, so do not assume that more information is unavailable.

Prisoner registers, 1862-1863, v. 55-57

This is what one of the better pages looks like.

Abbreviations:

RO = released on oath

ROB = released on oath and bond

sdy = I believe this is an abbreviation for Sandusky, Johnson's Island prison

ex. = exchanged

The records in these volumes occasionally have information in different formats than my table below. If you see two counties separated by a bar "/", the first county is residence, the second county is where they were arrested.

Many were sent to Washington or Fort Delaware for exchange, to be sent behind Confederate lines, and of course many never returned to their homes. Some would continue imprisoned at Fort Delaware. An example of those sent to Washington for exchange was the family of Samuel Clawson of Weston, Lewis County, who never returned to Weston. You can read a little more of the Clawsons in Dr. Camden's Ordeal. Missing from this particular volume of records is the name of George Clawson, but he will be found in Vol. 53 once I've finished it.

On some page images, such as image 199, the page heading has "Prisoners of War" with "War" marked through and "Citizens" written in at the top of the page.
