    This regiment was originally known as the 1st Kanwaha Regiment,

    part of the Wise Legion, and commanded by Colonel Christopher

    Tompkins. Parts of this regiment were reorganized in 1862 into the

    26th Virginia Infantry Battalion with parts of the 59th Virginia Infantry.

    This regiment was one of the first organized in northern West Virginia,

    April-June 1861, and was under the command of Col. George Porterfield.

    Half of the regiment was lost when it was surrendered by Lt.-Col. John

    Pegram after the battle at Rich Mountain. The 9th Battalion and a company

    of the 31st Virginia Infantry was added to bring it back to strength.

62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry 

    "The 62nd went into the engagement with about 500 men & lost killed & wounded

    240 nearly one half. Our entire loss in the division was 550 so you see our regt.

    lost nearly one half. Seven company commanders were either killed or wounded

    in this regt. at New Market. The colors were shot down 4 times. There is not a more

    gallant sight in the service than this. The 62nd has the praise of everyone.
