My Brother, (who is more of a Guitarist and has a lovely blond vintage Fender Telecaster in his collection), was given a Salmon Pink Ashton Ukulele as a bit of a joke, and then his daughter got him a Black Mahalo Flying V. Whilst the Ashton was a crappy as they always are, (now its officially his wifes), the Flying V was at least playable and playing with it whilst visiting him was the inspiration behind me starting to invite Ukuleles to Ukulele Corner.  Though my brother is, as I said primarily a Guitarist, he does get his Ukuleles out when I visit these days and we have a Ukulele jam. For this reason he needed something that was a bit more playable than the Flying V, hence a Makala Pineapple.

Makala are the bottom end range for Kala and so are all laminate and nothing fancy. They are however, competently made and reasonable to play with a lot of people saying that they are the best budget range, (with their Dolphins being the best budget Ukulele available - they are certainly better than Ashtons!). I wouldn't wholeheartedly endorse this assertion as this appear to come from the same Chinese factory as a lot of other brands of Ukulele, thus making them all basically equal, but that said this a perfectly reasonable Ukulele and can be improved by putting better strings on than the GHS ones it comes with.
