Restringing the dryer heating element

       Restring kit

You do NOT have to buy the complete heater assembly on most dryers. It is more convient to buy the whole thing but it is way cheaper to restring the heater. Just remember this: their can be no large gaps anywhere along the coil or the element will fail quickly. All the coils must be completely even spaced all the way around the element. Pre stretching the coil before stringing it along the way is a good thing. It helps keep the gaps from happening. You must take your time. The easiest one for me to restring is the frigidaire/westinghouse dryer element. Most of these come pre stretched.

GE does not come prestretched and you have to deal with 2 sets of coils. It is very easy to get gaps in the coils on this dryer so pre stretching is a must.

You can still screw it up if not careful.  On a frigidaire single element pan I go ahead and attach the terminals first then I connect the coil at the 12 o'clock position then the 6 o'clock then the 3 o'clock then the 9 o'clock then in between criss crossing as I go. Try not to break or loose them ceramic standoffs, they are 5 bucks apiece. Also you need to go ahead and get the pan off the back of the dryer and sit it on a good work surface. Trying to string it while it is still attached to the back of the dryer is just too much work.
