CYCLING

This old man's a cyclist,

He wears a cycle hat.

He wears a lycra outfit.

Well, what do you think of that?

He looks a proper narna

In his cycle shorts and shirt

At least if he falls, his helmet

Stops his head from being hurt!

Cet homme vieux est un cyclist.

Il porte un chapeau cycle

Et il porte aussi

Les vêtements du Lycra.

On le regard un fou

Dans ses pantalons bicyclette

Mais s'il tomberait, son casque

Défenderait sa tête.

Cycle Challenges raising funds for Barrett's Wessex in France, Holland, Vietnam, Cambodia, Peru, Burma and UK

In July 2010, I completed a 400 mile sponsored cycle through France in 5 days raising funds for Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign (now known as Barrett's Oesophagus UK). I posted daily tweets of my progress on Twitter. Some photos are available here.

In July 2012, I cycled approx 350 miles through Holland in pouring rain to raise money for Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign. My photos may be seen here.

In November 2012, I cycled from Saigon to Angkor Wat to raise money for Barrett's Wessex. Click on this link for details.

Each time I decide to participate in a sponsored cycle event, I say it will be the last and the Vietnam - Cambodia trip was intended as that. However, I enjoyed it so much, ...

In October 2014 I cycled from Machu Picchu to the Amazon.

Photos from the event may be seen in my Flickr album here. And videos may be seen here.

For my last big challenge, I cycled from Mandalay to Lake Inle (and thence travelled on to Rangoon) in Burma / Myanmar in March 2016.

Photos from the event may be seen in my Flickr album here. And videos may be seen here.

Since I got my life back after an operation in 2009, I've been determined to remain fit.

In 2016, I'm not cycling as much as I used to. I used to try and do 30 miles every day but now am happy to manage a couple of times a week - and it's often just the 11 mile Stoneham loop.

These links are to my usual practice routes:

My 11 mile Stoneham loop.

My 18 mile loop may be accessed here. (Via Fair Oak and Eastleigh)

My 30 mile loop- may be accessed here. (Via Wichester)

There are shortcuts on the 30 mile loop I may take if I wish. However, sometimes I may have decided on reaching Fair Oak to only complete the 18 mile loop and when I get to Eastleigh realise I'd like to have done more.

This route was designed originally to be a 7 mile optional extension to my 18 (or even 30) mile loop but makes an alternative 20 mile route in its own right.

And for those mornings I just want to cycle on and on but still be home by midday, the big loop covering all extensions is nearly 45 miles.

Whilst training prior to my Burma cycle in 2016, I used this: my new favourite New Forest loop.

In 2012, I changed my default morning cycle to this 23 mile loop via Romsey and Millbrook adding this extension via Hythe ferry when I want a longer route making a total distance of 28 miles which can be easily extended into the New Forest.

An alternative on sunny days is this 25 mile New Forest loop with a return via the Hythe Ferry. The 2 miles between Ashurst and Lyndhurst are boring but made up for between Lyndhurst and Hythe.

Another favourite route is this recreational 40 mile circular in the New Forest via the Hythe Ferry.
