The Chicken Squad

Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie might be chicks but they're not chicken. And they're not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they're too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime -- and there is a lot of that in the yard! Good thing the chicken squad is on the case. (From Simon & Schuster)

I initially picked this series up from the library because it was small, had lots of illustrations and a quick flip through had me laughing out loud. The Chicken Squad did not disappoint. My husband is actually re-reading these books with our son now because he finds them so funny. I've also read the first book aloud to a class of second graders who were highly entertained!

Why Mom (& Dad) love this series:

  • Fast paced and full of quick wit that kids will still "get."
  • A SUPER read aloud. Lots of chance to perform and make it even more FUN!
  • Easy enough for early chapter book readers to read on their own.
  • The different personalities of the chicks are very funny. You'll feel like you know them!
  • The chicks often misunderstand "the mystery" and kids have fun figuring it out before the characters do.
  • The shoe... (you'll see).

Why my son loves it:

  • The chicks are funny!
  • The chicks don't know what anything is.
  • The chicks have funny unexpected things they keep around in the coop (like art supplies and spy gear!)

There are 6 books in this series so far. Here they are in order:
