Dory Fantasmagory

As the youngest member of her family, Dory is often left to her own devices—including her wild imagination, untiring energy, and a whole host of imaginary friends. With plenty of pictures bursting with charm and character, this hilarious series about an irresistible rascal is the new must-read for the chapter book set. (From Penguin Random House)

This is one of those cases where I probably enjoy the books just as much as my kids. I first read this aloud to the whole family on a road trip to Yosemite. We were all cracking up. Dory's just like so many of my favorite very imaginative kids. She and her extensive cast of imaginary friends get into a lot of hilarious situations. But as fantastical as Dory's world is, the stories address some very real situations that a lot of kids face. It's a great learning tool as well as a rollicking read!

What Mom loves about this series:

  • Dory reminds me of some of my favorite kids. You know the ones... the march-to-their-own-beat mischievous ones that you can't help but be frustrated with and adore all at the same time.
  • Dory works through some very real issues during her imaginary adventures: being left out by older siblings, having trouble reading, making new friends, and more!
  • Lots of fun illustrations!

What my son loves about this series:

  • Dory's BIG imagination
  • Mrs. Gobble Gracker and Mary (imaginary enemy and best friend/monster, respectively)
  • Dory is funny!

There are five books in this hilarious series (so far). Here they are in order:
