All good practise for the Irish Champs on Magilligan dunes north of Derry, leading up to the subtle forested dunes of JWOC on the West coast of Denmark. Sand dune experts should have a good season.

Compass Point to sponsor junior table quiz

The kind people in Compass Point have donated vouchers worth £120stg to the junior squad. This will be the first prize in the quiz. Compass Point is the UK's largest online orienteering & outdoor equipment shop and have a website where you can shop till you drop at www.compasspoint-online.co.uk. Thanks also to the Great Outdoors in Dublin for providing many of the spot prizes for the raffle.

Maths and orienteering! Leaving Cert. student and Irish junior squad member Alan Lane was part of the winning Midleton CBS team at the national Team Math final in UCC. Alan competed at EYOC, JEC and JHI in 2008 as an M18. The team was coached by well-known orienteer Liam O'Brien. You can read an article about the win from the Irish Times here.

5th May 2009

The junior squad was well represented at the annual Jukola relay, at which over 15,000 orienteers and 2,000 teams congregated at Mikkeli in Finland. Niall Ewen (2nd leg), Conor Short (4th leg) and Colm Moran (6th leg) were running for the all-Irish team that finished a respectable 321st position. Ruairi Short ran the last leg for Tullinge SK's second team, who finished 190th, while Nick Simonin ran the 'long night' leg for OK Tisaren's second team who finished 116th. Click on the positions for detailled results. Norway's Kristansand OK took first place in a close finish involving Daniel Hubmann, Thierry Guergiou (Kalevan Rasti, Finland, 2nd) and Emil Wingsted (Halden SK, Norway, 3rd). All in all, a fantastic experience

6th May 2009

Thank you to everyone who supported the junior fundraising quiz at the weekend. Between the quiz and the raffle, we raised €909 to help fund the junior squad's extensive competition and training calander. Thanks again!

23rd April 2009

(from the NI orienteering website)

Congratulations to Jack Miller on being selected as the Down Democrat’s Down Junior Clubmark Sports Association’s National and International Junior Sportsperson of the Year. He won the award in recognition of his standing as the leading M14 orienteer in Ireland, North and South, and for his consistent top 10 performances in British prestige events. He beat off strong competition from young contenders from the Rugby and Netball world, all of whom had reached the final shortlist for this award. Typically modest, his first words on hearing the announcement were “I don’t believe it”. Jack represented Ireland at the JHI in 2008 in England where he finished 3rd in M14. He is also the reigning M14 Irish Champion in the classic distance.

19th April 2009

Tiomila, Sweden: Top junior stars Ruairi Short and Nicholas Simonin were in action for their Swedish clubs at the Tiomila relays last night. Nick ran the first leg for OK Tisaren 2 and came back in 123rd position (out of over 350 teams, and less than 10 minutes down on first place!). Ruairi likewise had a great run on the last leg for Tullinge SK 2 to bring them home in 89th position. Full results are online at www.tiomila.se.
