Portugal O Meeting
Eleven members of the Junior Squad (accompanied by 5 adults) were at the POM  last week.  There were a few glitches: the Start draw was very uneven, and despite tales of shorts-and-t-shirt weather last year the weather was rather Irish, bitterly cold at first, then cold & wet.  But to balance these drawbacks the Portuguese were friendly and relaxed, prices were cheap, & the orienteering was terrific (though the W15s might have liked a little more challenge) - 4 days of orienteering mostly in fast open pine forest with some very complex contour areas, with the bonus of the night Sprint, a manic dash among the alleys of a seaside village.
The competition specially in the older in the Junior classes was fierce, best result was Niamh Corbett 4th in W15 with Cliona McCullough just behind  in 7th.  Best of the boys was Laurence Quinn 11th in M17 just ahead of Jack Millar & Cillin Corbett.

Sand Dunes
2009-2010 is turning out to be the year of the sand dunes.
It started with the JHI in Newborough.  The Connachts are on the high dunes of Finner in Donegal, and 2 days of the JK are on sand dunes in Devon.  All good practise for the Irish Champs on Magilligan dunes north of Derry, leading up to the subtle forested dunes of JWOC on the West coast of Denmark.  Sand dune experts should have a good season.

Entries for the Connacht Champs close this weekend see http://www.wego.orienteering.ie

This is the last event in the Junior Cup competition.
Results so far are on the Junior Cup page.  Some classes are pretty much settled, but there could be big changes in M14, M16 & M18, specially if those who have only run in 3 events are at Finner.

10 November 2009
Training for M/W 16 and older potential EYOC and JWOC squads - Sat 28 November, the day before the Connacht Champs.  Some light training on the Burren but the emphasis will be on preparation for the big international races.

9 November 2009
The Connacht Champs are the last major event of 2009, and the last of the Junior Cup series.
Entries are open til Fri 20 November.
Current standings in the Junior Cup, including Munster Champs results, will be up here very soon...

15 October 2009
The Junior Cup.  There are only 2 events left in the Junior Cup league, Munster and Connacht Champs.  The closing date for The Munster Champs is Saturday 17 Oct.
The best 4 out of the 7 events count for the league, the events are Leinster, Northern Ireland, Munster, Connacht Champs, IOC Long & Middle, and Shamrock day 2.  Details at 'The Junior Cup' on the Events page.

Juniors at Jukola

The junior squad was well represented at the annual Jukola relay, at which over 15,000 orienteers and 2,000 teams congregated at Mikkeli in Finland.   Niall Ewen (2nd leg), Conor Short (4th leg) and Colm Moran (6th leg) were running for the all-Irish team that finished a respectable 321st position.   Ruairi Short ran the last leg for Tullinge SK's second team, who finished 190th, while Nick Simonin ran the 'long night' leg for OK Tisaren's second team who finished 116th.   Click on the positions for detailled results.   Norway's Kristansand OK took first place in a close finish involving Daniel Hubmann, Thierry Guergiou (Kalevan Rasti, Finland, 2nd) and Emil Wingsted (Halden SK, Norway, 3rd). All in all, a fantastic experience
