Placement Cell


The Centre for Bioinformatics, established in 2005 runs three unique programs - MPhil. Bioinformatics, MPhil. CADD and Msc. Computational Biology. In addition, we are actively into research with a PhD programme having a dozen students at the moment. Highlights of some of our recent activities are as follows:
  • Funding from UGC, DST(GoI), DIT(GoI), KSCSTE and Govt. of Kerala.
  • Publication of half a dozen highly accessed papers.
  • Two patents already filed.
  • Popular tools/software developed – C-GREX, LocoProt, MTar, MPred, RePAM, dCom.
  • Visit of three Nobel laureates in 2010-2011.
  • Organization of two major international events; Bioinformatica Indica 2010 and Biodesign India v1.0, 2010.
  • Successful industry incubation of Sooryakiran Bioinformatics Pvt. Ltd. In 2007-2009.
  • Launching of Systems and Synthetic Biology group headed by eminent scientist – Dr. Pawan K. Dhar, Senior Scientist. Formerly Head, Synthetic Biology, RIKEN, Advanced Sciences Institute, Japan. He is Editor–in–chief of Systems and synthetic Biology - Springer.
  • Up-gradation to The State Inter-university Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics (SIUCEB) in 2010.
  • Imminent up-gradation to the Department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.

Opportunities in Bioinformatics

Work Profile: Develop scripts, programs and pipelines for laboratory automation, primer/assay design and data analysis; curate literature data on mutations and variations in human diseases for data curation projects; write programs needed for data curation and also develop routines to improve methods of data mining and extraction; contribute to various research and commercial projects in the SciGenom’s bioinformatics portfolio.

Requirements: Drive for learning new programming language and aptitude for reading scientific journals.

Work Profile: The person will be responsible for the application development and high-throughput analysis of biological data i.e., gene expression and genomic data.

Requirements: PhD / M.Tech. / M.Phil. in Bioinformatics with two years experience or MSc. Bioinformatics/ informatics/ Engg with more than two years experience in bioinformatics research ; programming experience in UNIX/LINUX environment using languages such as C, Perl, Java, Python , MATLAB , R and relational databases such as MySQL or Postgre SQL; experience with Object oreiented programming in Java and internet programming.

Work Profile: The person will be responsible for high -throughput analysis of biological data.

Requirements: MSc. Bioinformatics/ informatics/ Engg with at least one year experience in bioinformatics research ; programming proficiency in C, Perl, Java, Python, MATLAB, R and relational databases such as MySQL or Postgre SQL.

Work Profile: Handle data integration, analysis, and interpretation; generalizing project specific solutions as software components in our bioinformatics infrastructure; support scientists in their everyday use of our services, and in cooperation with the rest of the team support and administrate the bioinformatics environment

Requirements: Master’s or PhD degree in bioinformatics, systems biology or computer science; solid experience with scripting languages e.g. Perl and UNIX shell scripting, UNIX system administration and database development like MySQL or Oracle; experience with expression data analysis, such as microarray or Next Generation Sequencing will be a plus.

Work Profile: Developing a novel imaging database for microscopic images for drug discovery; develop and maintain sophisticated data management schemes for imaging in support of data intensive biological research efforts.

Requirements: PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, or closely related discipline; 2 years of practical programming experience in common scientific and technical languages (e.g. Java, J2EE, C++, Matlab, R, etc); established track record of bioinformatics or computational biology research as shown by at least 5 peer-reviewed publications in these field.

Work Profile: Development of novel methods and implementation of existing methods for the analysis of next generation data (NGS, 454 and Illumina platforms) applied to the study of small RNAs; transcriptomics and annotation (mRNA-seq); epigenomics (ChIP-seq) in plants and fruit trees.

Requirements: PhD in bioinformatics or PhD in Biology with proven experience in bioinformatics; Demonstrated experience in use of various bioinformatics and NGS data analysis applications; Strong skills with scripting/programming languages; demonstrated skills in performing batch analyses, parsing, building figures and interpreting results; understanding of statistical analysis methods and knowledge of plant biology, molecular biology and genomics is highly desirable.

Work Profile: Broad range of data analysis related skills and experience with next generation sequencing data to support research projects including those that are aimed at understanding the genetics of complex human diseases; routine data analysis and data mining tasks to fully embedded research projects.

Requirements: PhD or a Master’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, human genetics or a related field; several years hands-on experience analyzing genome-scale data sets; excellent knowledge of R/Bioconductor and Unix/Linux environments as well as scripting/programming skills; know-how with omics data analysis, including next generation sequencing, especially DNA-seq; experience with SQL and development/querying of databases advantageous

Work Profile: Apply computational and statistical methods to the analysis of genome-wide SNP, whole exome, and whole genome sequence data to identify variation underlying the risk of immune related and metabolic diseases.

Requirements: PhD, or equivalent, in the fields of computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, epidemiology or statistical genetics; Hands on expertise on the analysis of next generation sequence data, metagenomics, and genome-wide association studies; A record of peer-reviewed publications, and a strong commitment to collaborative and interactive research.

Work Profile: Support scientists in the analysis of data generated by high throughput technologies, from experimental planning, data validation to functional analysis; collaborate with our scientists on several projects in parallel; participate in the set-up and development of data analysis pipelines; train in-house users in bioinformatics and statistics.

Requirements: PhD, Diploma or equivalent in mathematics, physics, statistics, bioinformatics; experience in the analysis of high-throughput data, such as from next-generation sequencing, flow cytometry, proteomics, or microscopy; in-depth knowledge of at least one high-level programming language; interest to acquire in-depth knowledge about biological processes.

Work Profile: Evaluate, extract and summarize pertinent information from literature and online resources; person will be part of CALIPHO, a joint group of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and the University of Geneva.

Requirements: Requirements: PhD in the life sciences; at least 3 years of laboratory experience.

Work Profile: The persons will join the neXtProt development team which is involved in the very challenging task of building an innovative integration platform that will provide a wealth of curated and quality-graded data on human proteins and the necessary bioinformatics tools to analyze them; person will be part of CALIPHO, a joint group of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and the University of Geneva.

Requirements: Experience with Java, Hibernate, Spring; experience with Web development technologies; experience with unit and integration testing; knowledge of relational databases.

Work Profile: Perform computational analysis of flow cytometry data; understand the relevant methodologies involved in the analysis of Flow Cytometry data; implement code using the R programming language; algorithms and analysis; team members ; write up documentation for the code and give summary oral presentation of the results in English Communicate regularly with the supervisor on work progress and participate in the development of new understand requirements and solutions formulated by other problems.

Requirements: Ongoing Master or Engineering Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics; fluent in the R programming language Strong programming skills; knowledge of dimensionality reduction techniques (e.g. Clustering, PCA…); familiarity with UNIX/Linux platform Personal Skills & Competencies.

Work Profile: The person will be responsible for the development and application of modern approaches to data analysis challenges arising from high-throughput experiments.

Requirements: PhD in a technical or scientific field and have demonstrated experience in bioinformatics research through systems and data integration involving at least one of - Applied bioinformatics (sequence analysis, data mining) - Classical statistics, probabilistic modelling, or machine learning.
